@Picnic,

Unfortunately KTP does not allow any guest which arrives after gate closing time to enter the park. There might be the exception on the rule for guests who might have had a vehicle breaking down. There should be a very good reason why guests arrive late at the gate and then wants to enter.

I don't know why that be the case, but I know that people from Upington would visit the park more over weekends. Because of the "no late entry" they don't. I think the parks can reconsider. :hmz:

:hmz: You have a point picnic, especially out of season when Upington weekenders could swell the coffers a bit.

Maybe just for Friday nights.

LAST PETROL STATION BEFORE KTP

Unread postby DSouter » Fri May 04, 2012 12:36 pm

Hi fellow forumites

What is the last petrol station before entering the KTP - I have a thirsty V8 Defender and would like to save a rand or two by filling up before entering the park and paying the extra R1 or so for petrol there?

Turn into Ashkam and drive a little way in.

There is a petrol station at which we reinflate our tyres if we forget to do so on exiting the park.

I have 3 tanks - a 78Ltr main tank, a 45Ltr rear wing tank and a 45 Ltr front tank which gives me 168 Ltrs. Long runs I get 7.2 Ltrs Km which gives me a range of around 1200Kms. However in the park I am banking on about 5 Kms per ltr which gives me a range of around 840 Kms between fill ups.

I make it a practice to always try and keep the fron tank full for emergencies and only run on the back two, When I find it necessary to change to the front tank I do a fill up so I shouldn't have a problem  .

Petrol tanker indeed!

I get 7.5 km/l in my twincab, and it does not get much worse, certainly not down to 6.

DSouter,

The last petrol station where you might save a few sents will be Upington. The closest petrol station to Twee rivieren is at Molopo lodge 60 km from Twee Rivieren, after passing Ashkam as KG already mentioned.

I just want to add that my old Isuzu Frontier 3.2 V6 was just as thirsty and the best towing was between 5 and 6 km/l. Driving from Jhb to Durban we had to stop at Harrismith to fill up.

Maybe you must look at the option to travel via Namibia. The last info I could get was R10.23/ l for ULP 95 in Keetmanshoop. The only problem border crossing will cost R220, but considering you can save R1 on a liter or even more and fill up 168 liter you can save at least over R300 by filling up twice. This is just an idea and will be very usefull if you consider to stay the first and last night at Mata-Mata.

Hi Jvr

Thanks for the suggestion but I am a Brit and to renew my passport is going to cost me more than the petrol savings plus the extra time taken will eat into my KTP enjoyment. Will definately bear that in mind for future reference though. I believe Botswana fuel is even cheaper even thought they buy from SA.

Are we going to make it?

Unread postby Pala » Mon May 07, 2012 1:52 pm

Hi Forumites

I need your help please! We have never been to KTP before so are planning a trip for July (only 4 nights :( ). To save time we are flying into Upington. Our flight lands at approx 11 am, we need to pick up a hire car and do a trolley dash around the supermarket before leaving Upington.

Now the problem! Our plan is to spend the first night at Kalahari tented camp. I've read that it is 260km's from Upington to Twee Rivieren - how long does this take?
We then need a minimum of 2 and a half hours to get from Twee Rivieren to Kalahari tented camp (without stopping at sightings).

Do we have enough time from landing at 11am to get to Kalahari tented camp by 6pm (bearing in mind we need to pick up a car and shop too!!)?

Please send me your thoughts!

Thanks for your help!
Pala
