I will be visiting the park in August and traveling with an off-road caravan. What is the dune road like linking Nossob to Mata Mata? Will I need a 4x4 to tow the van over this route or will a 4x2 Fortuner be OK?

I'll be in the park during April this year. If you care to make a note to send me a private mail during May / June I'll let you have a detailed report and some photos. Just be aware that road conditions in the park can and do change from one week to the next.
Having said the above, from my past experience in the park, you should have no problem towing the caravan with your Fortuner.

Hallo Berkhead,
I think you and your 4x2 Fortuner will do it easily.
Have fun!
Only about 18 weeks to August!

Hi Berkhead

The UDR is quite up and down in sections, and a little sandy, but I managed without even much considering road conditions when I did in in a 2x4 CRV with very much road biased tyres. I am sure you will be fine unless the rains did something really odd (I was there in December last year and did not find, even when it was raining, that either of the dune roads was a vehicular challenge). The only real challenge on the dune roads is to keep your eyes where you are going as the scenery is so good, right throughout the day.

For details on a trip to KTP, especially if you are photographically inclined, read my start to finish (although the report is still in progress, but already on pg 17) travel tale - the link is in my signature.

John

Hi all

My wife and I are considering doing the Nossab 4 x 4 eco trail. has anybody done it before that can give us a few pointers.
We're in a Jimny.
Also what are the night time temperatures like in late July?
When you camp at night, is it in the open or is in a fenced off area?

You'll no problem in the Jimny. Temperatures at night are cold; very often below zero. Overnight areas are noy fenced, just your tent between you and whatever is outside. Enjoy it!

@Berkhead. Just keep to the left on the 'rollercoaster', but be aware of washaways that occasionally encroach into the road. You might have to take evasive action.
@Chappies. It is a great experience being away from everyone else. One or two dunes were a bit challenging, but you will find it great fun with possible nocturnal visitors to your camp, loos with a view and showering with the water you brought after hoisting it up. Go for it.

Thanks guys for the response.
We are so excited and can't wait.
My wife wants to know how often are there human fatalities? (ha ha) with no fence between you and lions etc.
We have a simple canvas dome tent (2,5 x 2,5m)
Is 10 litres of water a day enough?
and a bundle of good quality wood per night?

No fatalities AFAIK Chappies.

Your biggest worry is the scorpions. Lions are not happy around humans.

One of the stopovers is at Witgat, where there is the sweetest water in the park.

I traveled the upper dune road several times during my recent trip in Feb/March and had no trouble at all despite some heavy rains prior to my arrival and once during
Actually thought it was the easiest road in the park to drive

Hi, also a first timer!! What I want to know is it possible to drive from Polentswa to Mata-Mata in 1 day taking the Bitterpan route? We will be in a Toyota 4x4 with an Echo 4x4 trailer.

Hi ecospook.

You can only do the Bitterpan 4x4 track if you are booked to stay at Bitterpan camp. The only other route is via the Upper Dune Road. I'm not near a map of KTP at the moment, so not sure of distance/time of your route.

Also you cannot take a trailer on the Bitterpan road even if you stay there.

Nope. If you take the Bitterpan road you must book & overnight in the camp.

Hi Ecospook,

The Bitterpan route is only open to overnight visitors at Bitterpan and you are not allowed to tow a trailer on that route. If you do want to book at Bitterpan you will be required to leave your trailer behind.

The alternative route goes down to Dikbaardskolk picnic site where you turn right towards Kamqua picnic site and right to Mata-Mata. It can easily be done in one day, but it is a long stretch of ~230 km and may take you 5 - 6 hours if you are not stopping at any sightings. Refueling at Nossob might be required as well.
