A friend of mine recently had a scary exchange with a cape cobra, right at the front door of his office, in the middle of town! That made me think - does Sanparks have any emergency procedure/protocol in the case of snake bite/medical emergency in Kgalagadi? Or is it a case of saying your last prayers?

Hi Eddie have a look here

Hello again jelico60;

Anti-venom is very expensive and snake bites are treated differently than in the past, we are NOT allowed to give any type of anti-venom only medical doctors are. Regarding strokes etc in the park we could assist as first responders and treat with first aid, but again medical assistance from doctors are needed and KTP does not have a doctor in the park.

Hope this answers your questions?

Eddie Upington do not have an Air Ambulance.

If a patient has to go from Upington to CT we have to wait for the Red Cross Aeroplane.

This is something I've wondered about. It is interesting to hear what there isn't but could someone say what you actually would or should do? Obviously I assume this would vary depending upon whether it was in a main camp, a wilderness camp or a picnic site. Apart from being alert and cautious how do we ensure that we don't need to know?

PS Why aren't SANParks officials allowed to have antivenom? Surely with some fast-acting venoms it could make the difference between life and death? Is Upington the closest medical facility?

Upington is closest town with a hospital. There are medical clinics in Askham and Rietfontein.

Wow, I thought that at least puff adder and cape cobra antivenoms would be on hand at the 3 main camps! Scary! Suddenly I am rethinking taking my little one there until much older...

Apart from being able to identify, or at least describe, the snake will be valuable for a medical person to determine what antivenom is required.

Also, what would one do for a scorpion sting?

As a note, however, as described in my travel tale, if stung by a bee, hold a a half cut onion over the stung area and the swelling will be minimal and the following day there will not be the typical itchiness. Twee Rivieren restaurant staff introduced me to this one :gflower:

hi,

I would also like to know what one has to do if stung by a scorpion? And what do you have to do in case of a snake bite? Does anyone happen to know where the nearest place with antivenom is?

I am going in two weeks and being from Europe I am not really well informed....

Thank you!

Slightly worrying that no-one seems able to answer this one but at least I guess that means it has never happened to a forumite so I guess the chances of it happening are low!

I found a useful link:

http://www.wikihow.com/Treat-a-Scorpion-Sting

In short, wash the area with soap and water; keep the area clean and disinfect; apply a cold compress / ice to reduce swelling; take over the counter pain killers as required; seek medical assistance if a child or adult who is not optimally fit.

Also, it seems that there are not lethal scorpions in our KTP?

Keep your eyes open, never walk in the dark without a torch... I am 58 years old, have been all over Africa, and touch wood, no bites yet... so the chances of being bitten are far less than being killed when you cross a road at home, or drive on the N2 to Cape Town... hope that helps.
At least I know Sanparks are helpful -- slept in the "tent" that used to be in the caravan park against the wall when a serious desert storm suddenly caused such fierce winds that a massive steel cabinet was blown over onto my wife -- fortunately only crushing her toe so the bones were sticking out etc.
Packed everything into our car/trailer within minutes, rushed to Sanparks housing, hooted, and they let us out within a minute by a side entrance -- long tar road to Upington -- operated on toe at 12 pm, and all OK. Took about 3 hours from accident till op started -- not too bad...
More people are injured/killed in motor accidents en route to Twee Rivieren on winding roads... have yet to hear of a snake bite fatality.
Enjoy!

Thanks Friedrich! I do realise that the chances are low but I prefer to be as prepared as possible. The same way I try to take precautions driving etc and will be aiming to minimise any risks on our trip... it's just that snake bites are a much less familiar risk!
