I think Red Dune's story is the one I was thinking of. I assume, Red Dune, that the tale you have recounted is NOT the one that WeskusKlong kindly uploaded (and translated)?

BushBaptist, which is the version you remember?

PS. I love the French, but anyone who has ever had the misfortune of driving in France will not be surprised at their antics in the bush! Not saying anything.... just saying!

Red Dune's version is the one I recall.

NB Anne-marie, I said French MEN, not angels.

Red Dune's tale is the one I remember, but I canot remember now who told it to me or where I heard/read it originally.

What is it with French visitors then?

if there was cell coverage around the (very few) roads of the park incidents like these would not happen...

Cellphone coverage?

Definitely a good thing in any emergency. The opposite is also true.

I just came back from a Richtersveld/Namibia trip and in some desolate areas we had cellphone reception - something I tried to get away from

A few years ago my wife worked as a school secretary and was honorary (meaning not paid more) head of IT (she had the most knowledge) in her 'spare' time. These 2 jobs were meant that when the rest of the staff was enjoying a well deserved holiday, she was installing new computers/software/clearing off stuff at year end, so on the few days we did get away in a year, it was a pleasure to drive out of 2R and see the signal disappear, because the principal, or whever couldn't get hold of her to ask dumb questions or make her feel guilty about being away.

So please forgive me if I don't care a fig about the cursed cellphone, which we managed well without 20 years ago. We planned for emergencies then.

BB , the city slickers get angry if they can't connect to the internet and twitter or whatever they do when they walk around looking at the screen of that cell phone fruit machine goose / blueberry thing .
They mostly seem to be angry , talking loudly - the further you are from the city the louder one has to talk .

The latest Go! / Weg! magazine features yet more frenchmen lost in CKGR (edit - not KTFP .)

Hi I also try not to switch on my cellphone if I get back into a cellphone reception area at Twee Rivieren. The one year I had an uneasy feeling and switch on the phone just to see if I got any messages. Luckily nothing, but on returning from our trip a week later I got a phone call that my dad passed away.

Sometimes one need that phone, but again what did people do 20 years back.

I remeberred in the 90's I went hiking in the Cedarberg and a Cape Nature worker passed us on foot to give a urgent message of a family member that passed away to some-one in the next over-night hut. Sjoe those days were really tough but you had people committed to run 40 km just to give a message. Wonder who will do it today. :hmz:
