We are heading for KTP   in mid August and would like input from the Cape Town mites as to how long it takes realistically. We don't have a 4x4 (4 wheel drive, but no low range) and keep pretty much to the speed limit.

We want to try the Calvinia route but don't know where to go from there.

We are also hoping to stop over in Van Rhynsdorp or Calvinia for the night and I was wondering if anybody knows of some good, cheap accommodation.

20 more sleeps!!

Rookie

We drive Cape Town to Upington via Calvinia,Brandvlei,Kenhardt - approx 950km- sticking to the speed limit and with plenty of good stops - its a full days drive leaving early morning but as your first day of a holiday it is very do-able  However we can recommend a very comfortable, clean and affordable overnight stay at clear water oasis which is just outside Vanrhynsdorp if you planning on leaving in the afternoon. Friends of ours have also stayed at blue Naartjie guest house in Calvinia which is also highly recommendable. Lots of options in Upington - check out Upington.com From Upington it's a short 265km to Twee Rivieren - this allows you to stock up on any fresh produce, drinking water, biltong or any other forgotten item before heading into park! Enjoy the planning ....envious

I am pretty sure the distance from CT to Upington is lees than 900 via Calvinia.

We leave at 2h00 and are at 2R by about 13h00 in the bakkie, without batting it.

BB you are right, Cape Town to Upington is just short of 800kms, about 790 kms. from Upington to TR it is another 250 kms of good tar road.

Rookie, in April there were roadworks on the road to Brandvlei, after the turnoff from the Calvinia / Williston road, but we did not stop for long.

There are plenty of overnight places in and around Calvinia - just Google "Calvinia accommodation" and you should be OK.

Blackie.

Thanks so much for all the info.

We want to leave as soon after work as possible and then drive for 3-4 hours which would put us in Van Rhynsdorp or Calvinia. It seems that there is a lot of stopping in Keimos area which is a bit far.

It looks like we will have 1 day shorter in the park than originally thought, so need to get there as early as possible as our first night will possibly be at Urikuruus and not TR as planned.

Jo - I see that we are just missing each other at the various camps, but I willl keep a look out for the YR along the road (and hopefully at lots of lekker sightings).

Wow.....after what has seemed an eternity since making bookings, it is nearly time to hit the road to KTP :D. I am looking for advice on road conditions from persons who have recently travelled from Cape Town. I know that all routes seem to have stop and go's but which is the better way ie via Springbok, via Calvinia or the long haul via the N1 (Beaufort West) and N12/N10. I will be towing a caravan so there will be a couple of "overnights" before our arrival at TR. Thanks

:hmz: Tricky one this.

We went up and down 2 weeks ago, and between Vanrhynsdorp and the outskirts of Upington via Calvinia, we went through 18 to 20 stop/go road works. Also the Olifants river valley is undergoing an upgrade but it didn't affect us.

Even though there was more go than stop, but it was quite annoying. I heard there were a few via Spronkbok as well. We decided the extra 100 km wasn't worth it and returned via Calvinia.

Hi There!

We plan to travel DV ( on Thursday night 6 June leaving around 8pm) from Cape Town to Twee Rivieren. After reading up on this thread I have decided that maybe the route via Calvinia will be the one, I fancy the idea of cutting about 100kms off. We normally travel over Springbok, but a change is as good as a holiday.

A few concerns though, would diesel be available 24hr on this route, anything like a Wimpy or such for sustenance? I have never been on this route virtually from Clanwilliam to Upington, so all recommendations would be most helpful.
