Morning All,

I have a request from my side and would love any participation from the Forum side regarding to detailed information, at the end of the day it will be beneficiary to the forum members and to the Park.

I’m trying to plot all Predator sightings to try and work out animal movement (seasonal) and the hotspots. Hopefully I will be able to make a posting quarterly in a map form for all to see what has been done.

I would like the following information if Predator/s has been sighted:

The species I will be interested is:

Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Caracal, Brown Hyena, Spotted Hyena, Honey Badger

Dynamics of a lion pride (How many in total, how many males and how many females, how many cubs)
GPS points will be a winner, or a very close estimate to where they were spotted (Maybe waterhole).
Were they on a kill or not, if on a kill what was it they have killed.
Date the specie was seen.

Same with Cheetah, Leopard and the other predators sighted.

This thread can be used to post the requested information.

Please try not to duplicate sightings.

Cheetah mum with collar & 4 cubs 2 km north of Kij Kij en route to Melkvlei. - 9 Feb
4 cheetahs just south of Samevloeiing - 200 meters 9 & 10 Feb
2 cheetahs just north of Samevloeiing on the Kij Kij road - 1.2 km 9 &10 Feb
Lioness & 2 young males AT Samevloeiing 11 Feb
Brown hyena near Leeudril on night ride - 10 Feb (looking a bit like an oryx..... )
Spotted hyena 1 km north of Samevloeiing on Kij Kij road - 7 Feb
2 cheetahs near Craig Lockhart - 8 Feb
4 Lions (2 males & females - all young) at 14th Borehole 7 Feb


What about AWC KG, we saw a kill near Craig Lockhart.

All seen in Feb 2011.

Thanks for the info, if possible the date and month would be very helpful (I can though work with the month-for now) AWC is not on the list which I’m interested in plotting, not that they are not important but if i have to put all the animals on the list it would be never ending.

It would be appreciated if you could maybe say (in meters) how far north or south of a waterhole as the waterholes are about 10km from each other

A sugestion, why can't we list the sightings on an excel spreadsheet and forward them to you. You could them collate them more easily. Let me know if you want me to design a template for you and if so what info you require on the spreadsheet.

Hi Gavin,

I would agree that if one guest have a few sightings then the spreadsheet will work. I have made one, maybe i can forward it to you, have a look and see where we could better it.

For guests who doesnt have so many sightings to post they are welcome to post it here.

Not duplicating, just adding the necessary detail required for the Cheetah and 4 cubs sighting mentioned by BB

GPS point: S 26 13 04.5 E20 48 51.4 , as mentioned, a little bit north of Kij Kij waterhole, GPS will be exact, my estimate would be wrong
Date: 9 Feb 2011
Time: 9.15 am
Mother with 4 small cubs on a large Ram Springbok kill about 30m off the road

Regarding the movement on the Cheetah, I have spoken to Dr Mills about the movement and he will be doing with the Cheetah what I will be doing with all predators mentioned. I can ask him if he would be able to make his info available.

I will find out and let you know.
