We have made a tentative reservation for a first time trip to Kgalagadi - two adults travelling from Gauteng in a small 4x4 as inexperienced 4x4 drivers:

- Joburg to Kimberley for one night hoping to visit the Big Hole.

- Kimberley to Augrabies National Park for 2 nights.

- enter Kgalagadi with first 2 nights at Xaus Lodge after shopping in Upington. Have to meet lodge transport at 14h30 at Kamqua picnic site.

- drive to Nossob for 1 night

- 4x4 trail to Bitterpan for 1 night

- 4x4 trail to Kalahari Tented Camp for 2 nights

- 1 night somewhere en route back to Joburg

Any suggestions would be most welcome. We have just made the reservation so did not have much choice with camps.

Hi Sookie,

Seeing as you don't have much choice your itinerary looks just fine. Though the visit on the Nossob side is in my opinion a bit short, but you could always do a longer visit at a later stage.

The 4X4 route to Bitterpan, if at all possible try not to do this at midday. The warmer the sand the more difficult to cross the dunes. There is an escape route from Bitterpan to the upper dune road if you do not want to do the long 4X4 exit route on your way to KTC.

I do hope you'll have a wonderful experience........ Enjoy every moment.

The key to the Bitterpan trail is to lower tyre pressures right down. The big dunes are at the beginning . Just keep going, don't try to crawl up in low range, it's not needed. You will love it.
