So after watching the adolescent lions unsuccessfully chasing birds we went to Mata Mata for breakfast. When we returned to 14th about 3 hours later we found the large male (which was earlier sleeping across the riverbed) under the big tree by the pump holding onto and disembowelling a young springbok.

Then when one of the adolescent males approached him he made it clear he must back off!

Waiting patiently

We are not sure who made the kill but we think it must have been the large female that was with them :D

On the morning of the 18th Dec we travelled south from Grootkolk on our way to Nossob. About 800m from the Nossob gate I spotted a lioness on top of a wildebeest in the riverbed.

At first there was no movement but a few seconds later we witnessed the struggle for 15 minutes:

She was all by herself so she struggled to keep the animal down but seeing every muscle in her body working in the 36 degree heat shows you how strong these animals are!!!!

WoW Evel!
This is almost the same spot we saw a Lioness with a Wildebeest carcass on 27 Sept 2012.
She was relaxing in the shade ,while a Jackal tried to get a bite.

Image

She was not impressed and gave him a warning look...

Image

He tried his luck any way and within a flash she was up and running .

Image

It took almost 3 seconds and all the action was over and out.

Image

Image

No one mess with her food, even if she had her utmost!

This mating pair were seen between Marie se draai waterhole and Rooikop waterhole on 28th October 2013.
Son godin suggested they may be the same pair he saw a month later. We will leave you to judge.
