Feel free to post questions here related to the park, if I can not answer then immediately there will be other forumites which will be able to assist.

Thanks

Hi...
We visited the KgaLagAdi in the deCember of 2010...when we stayed at the Kalahari tEntEd camp we saw the strangest bird(we have visited the kgalagadi alot before and have never seen it before..)at first we didn't know what type of bird it was,but later figured it out...it was a African Cuckoo(Afrikaanse koekoek).
Is this bird common in the park or was it a rare sighting???

Hello Lionspoon,

thanks for your quick reply.

We plan to stay only three nights.
Our plan is to drive with the "Intercape" bus from Cap Town to Upington. In Upington we like to rent a car and then drive through the KTP (only the South African side). So we have to know which kind of car we have to rent. Would you recommend a 4x4 car?

We plan to stay the three nights in Twee Rivieren (because all other camps are fully booked) and make from there day tours into the park. May I ask you, what tour would you plan if you would visit the KTP the first time?

Are there any guided walks our game drives that you would recommend?

Thanks a lot!

Shame, that everything else is booked already, and I have to admit that TR wouldn't be my first choice to stay at.
But then again, rather three nights there than none at all.

As for the game drives and walks:

Kgalagadi offers the following activities:

Morning Walks (Maximum 8 guests per walk)
Afternoon walks (Max 8 guests per walk) - popular in the winter months.
Morning Drives
Sunset drives
Night Drives
Full Day Drives
Nossob Eco- 4x4 Trail (3 nights sleeping out in the dunes)
!Xerry Wilderness Trail (2 Nights sleeping out inthe dunes)

You might be lucky with sightings, but even if not, I reckon it's a wonderful experience to do either.
Have a look here for recent sightings (go to the last pages for the most actual ones) and here for an account of a morning walk.

Depending on when exactly you're going, you might not have much choice for a drive anyway. The route towards Nossob is closed at the moment (due to road works, until March 2011 is the current info) a bit past Samevloeiing. But the sighting link above will give you an idea of what you might be able to expect on the other route.

As for the car - I'd choose the 4x4 if you got the means to pay for it. That is the biggest flaw with it, it costs about 1000 Rand a day. :?

Hi Sigi and welcome to the forums! In december we used a Nissan X-trail 4x2 and it was just fine (if you are not going to do a 4x4 trail) and costs much less than a 4x4.

welcome to the forum sigi... 009 :D
Could you at least try to have one (or two) night at Nossob... the center of the park (Urikarrus, Kieliekrankie are very quickly full), maybe if you ask every 3-4 day... there will have something free

Thanks to all for your help!

What about camping in August in the KTP? Isn't it to cold?

Is there a good car rental in Upington?

@anne-marie: It would be great to stay a night in Nosob. Is it possible to get on a waiting list or something else?

I've never stayed in KTP in August, but from what I gathered on the various thread, it's advisable to have a hot water bottle in petto.

I take it, that you plan to go in August 2011? Well, book TR, if you haven't done yet. Then check availability more or less every day. Something will come up sooner or later. So far, it always worked for me. Thing is, people have to pay a deposit and the final balance a month before they actual stay there. Often they fail to do that and their reservation lapses. So don't despair if you haven't found anything within the next three month. There is still a chance even in July (if I got that August thing right, that is).

I'll pm you about a car rental. 4x4 that is.

Yes we visit the KTP in August 2011. Thanks for your hint with the booking

We will try that!

PS: Thanks for your efforts regarding the cars!

Hi..
We visited the kGaLagadi in the December of 2010,and while we were in the Mata-Mata area we saw 3 young male lions and i think one or 2 female with cubs...They were between Craig Lockhart and Dalkeith...
One of the young male lions had a very odd scar on his right hip...
Have you seen them and do you know maybe were the scar is from??? :hmz:

How do you add photos??then i could post some pictures...

Welcome to the forum sigi009.

In a non 4x4,

from Twee Rivieren (2R) you can drive to Nossob & back, even via the dune roads, in a day,
also to Mata Mata & back on another day.

Don't worry, the area from 2R can be very productive. The routes I have mentioned are along 'fertile' river beds and have waterholes, so they are your best chance at seeing good stuff. On your first trip, don't even think of Bitterpan.

Walks and sunset /night rides are done from 2R.

August can get very cold, but dry (below zero)

Is the road to Bitterpan to challenging for "newbies"? Or why do you recommend not to go there?
I'm just curious, we won't drive there... :)
