Hi

If rain looks like it will be a problem, then absolutely avoid those really great looking shady sites with the big trees at Nossob- the ones closest to the ablutions block. On a couple of trips i've seen those under a good foot of water. If no rain is predicted, they're awesome sites though and have power.

If you don't need power at Nossob, I always love the shady site in the corner along the fence on the road side of the campsite. No power, but really quiet and lovely. Best place to pitch a tent at Nossob. If it's going to rain though, put your tent on the higher ground near the tree. Been there, got mildly flooded.

I've never been flooded at Mata Mata, so can't speak for that, but the sites with the best shade are generally the ones towards the middle of the campsite. When it' winter and cold and shade isn't an issue, i've loved camping under the big old dead tree in the corner by the hide.

At MM, the area next to the fence is 'higher' that the rest of the camp site.

I should know, when I got up in Feb, I was on 'dry' land and the rest was under water.

Goes to show.....different every day, different every storm

If the weather looks at all threatening, pack absolutely everything away. We stayed in ground tent, us and our stretchers only and we remained dry inside We were impressed with how out tent stood up to the storms. I do suppose that also has something to do with how dry you stay.

Before the rain started


Our site the next morning after SO packed up, you can see our tent poles near (I actually mean next to ) the tree ....I was having a warm shower so missed taking a pic of our tent in the middle of the puddle

Thanks guys for the valuable input. It just goes to show that you can have different experiences on the same spot!

I will defnitely check out the sloping of the sites before pitching my tent. I saw way back in 2006 in Nossob how campsites can turn into dams overnight!!

Now that I can see the pic Dreamer, I am sure I was further off to the right.

I left before it was properly light in the mornings and someone was camped to my left, but I drove through water to get up the 'hill' to the chalets.
