Hello everybody !!!

I want to visit KTP and need some advice about the 4x4 road to Gharagab. Is it difficult to drive, is there deep soft sand on the dunes? I am not an experienced 4x4 driver and would like to go there, if possible.
Can anybody please share his experience on this road?

Thanks a lot and congrats to this wonderful forum

Hi Yaya, welcome to the forum.

We have been there several times and I think we are not very experienced in sand driving. There are some nice dunes to climb, but the sand is not really deep. You have to approach the dunes with just enough momentum and speed to perch on the top without getting stuck there or going over. Otherwise look here, we had to do some hills twice although we never got stuck. I would say it is not really a big challenge.

Sorry for the lousy video quality (as lousy as our driving skills)

We enjoyed the dune driving.

Last night I read through everything concerning Gharagab, trying to find out if I have saddled a bucking bronco with my KTP bookings. I intend to spend 5 days in Kgalagadi 15 - 19 Oct and in trying to find accommodation, nothing but 2R (15,16 and 19 Oct) and Gharagab (17 and 18 Oct) was available! I can't believe KTP is so popular to be booked out more than two months in advance!

Anycase... after having booked 15 and 16 Aug (entering) and 19 Aug for the rest-up prior to leaving, I then looked for place where I can bridge the accommodation gap as there was nothing available at 2R for those two days, and so ended up booking Gharagab.

We have only been to KTP once before and 2R was our base then as well... Gharagab?? I had to read up about this unplanned destination. Well, that is when I started to get the vibe that the 2R-Gharagab trip was seen and referred to as "not possible in one day" in the official version of KTP information. Yet, suggested travelling times are listed as 2R - Nossob: 3.5h; Nossob - Gharagab: 3.5h... that is 7h while 13h is available in Oct between gate opening/closing times. :hmz:

I have read some posts suggesting that the trip can comfortably be made. Should I be concerned?

Howzit Joh!

KTP is popular because some of us have done a bit of marketing

We have done 2R - Nossob - 2R and MM - Nossob - 2R in a day with a bit to spare, so I wouldn't worry unless you have serious diversions on the way. Just fill up with gas when you pass pumps.

Hey, Mr P! How's the BB keeping?

Thanks for the assurance that we can make 2R to Gharagab with ease... I thought it should be possible. It is just that darn "official" view that it isn't possible in a day

Ever been to Gharagab? What are the things/spots I should look out for?

Still kicking!

Nope! but I have been to Grootkolk, which is on the way.

A waterhole or 2 before GK, we had a tree filled with raptors, 40-50 or so. It was great. Forgot the w/h name now.

For me, personally, that will be quite a hectic drive….and you will be limited in the time you can spend at sightings. :?
It may help if you can split the drive with a night in Nossob….looking at the availability for that time, it seems there are still some options for your….but you might have to jump to get them tho.

Imagine running into you here amongst the forum dunes, Jumbo!

That Nossob spot was not there last night!

Thanks for the note... Have you been to Gharagab, Jumbo?

Good to “see” you again Johan… :D

Keep on checking for cancellations….you might still patch together a very nice trip…not that Gharagab is not nice…it is an awesome camp and I have a feeling you will thoroughly enjoy it.
Yip we have been there….I think I might have been the first person on this forum that did a bit of a report on Gharagab…and looking back at it now, with some really bad photos!!
Gharagab Wilderness Camp

Don’t rush to get to Gharagab….enjoy the road to the camp….

Thanks for the link, Jumbo. Reading all the positive comments about Gharagab has just fixed my route plan... I am not going to change it at all.

We were there in May for 1 night - the grass was very long on the drive to and from the camp - but by the time you go it should be a lot shorter - it was lovely - nice clear view looking down to the waterhole nd there also a lookout tower which gives you a 360 view- waterhole was lit througout the night while we were there - I specially loved the RED sand there after seeing so much grass on our adventure :P

BB: There was a Landy that managed it when we were there  :P Maybe those who make it will be so proud they made it that they won't worry to much about the sand   Personally we only felt we were true KTP visitors after our vehicle was good and dusty :D - only washed it when we got home

 @ spit-and-polish Landy... It has been a while since you rode in it, BB. It now has 240'000 on the clock, most of it in-da-bush; on-da-beach; thru-da-river... ova-da-dune should be a dawdle! I'm with you, ruthp; you only get that bundu-feeling once the car has a new colour!
