jeroenvm, thanks for all your info, we have never been to that side of SA. Would you say that the first week in August would be a good time for some good flower viewing and where could one stay that would house 4 x people (1 x couple + 2x mothers, all the accommodation on the site I see is only 2 or 3 people.
Thanks Dotty, you're right what was I smoking ? Namaqua it has to be, but where to stay on the way there and there ? We're from Jhb and 1 x couple with two mothers, they won't camp and most sanpark chalets I've seen only accommodated 2 or 3 ?

I have also only been to Namaqua in Sept (flower season). Even without the flowers the scenery in the area is spectacular. The chalets are fantastic. There are many drives in the area that you can do..but some require a 4 x 4 . I do think it is going to be hot...VERY hot in December though. Enjoy..come back and tell us all about it !!!

This is the thing: often one has to book ahead because of limited availability in the region, but then the peak flower parade is finely tuned to the weather: so, basically, one has to be lucky!
I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was possible to wild camp in the Namaqua N.P? Is this still the case, do you need authorisation and is it feasible in August?

I could be wrong but this year I believe that they have a series of specia all inl contract camps run in conjunction with SANParks during August and September which are the only two months the parks is open to visitors (Flower Season). See under Parks A-Z, click on Namaqua.
