Scary!

Hi there -

I am/was considering driving through the park as part of a road trip that will take me through Uppington on the way back down to Cape Town at the end of May. Planned to go via Nambia on the c13 or perhaps enter Nambia on n10/b3.

I'm a female traveling alone in a volvo xc90 - so have ground clearance but not 4x4.
Have traveled and camped alone on other trips so that side does not concern me - but after having a look at some of the roads wondering its that is a good idea - don't fancy being stuck out there for a long while.

Is there an 'easy' drive route through the park? Photography is my hobby so that is also a consideration. And if so which camp sites would you suggest?

Robynanne one of the best places for a photographer is Kokerboomkloof. It is the only inland camp and the scenary are Kokerbooms and big boulders. You can reach it without a 4x4, but there are no water so you will have to be selfsufficient. You very often found photographic tours camped at Kokerboomkloof.

The one problem about Richtersveld is not needing a 4x4 but rather what do you do if you have a breakdown on your own, depending on what time of year it might take a couple of days for somebody to reach you. For your vehicle the biggest risk will be loosing a tyre or two.

Does anyone know if one is allowed to fish (catch-and-release) in the Orange river section running through the Richtersveld park?
I find that it is quite difficult getting access to the river from anywhere else.

Any advice?

I may be mixing things up (it happens) but I am sure I read somewhere could have been forum or SANParks media that they had arrested poachers who were fishing in that stretch of the river. So
suggest making further enquires.

If the Honorary Rangers were allowed to angle in Kruger, then I think it will be OK for you to angle in Richtersveld but, on a catch and release basis only.

Angling in a National Park = the same as hunting in a National Park.

I sincerely hope that angling is not permitted.

I do not begrudge any angler anything, I have done competitive angling during the years 1956 to 2008, which included many years at National Championships.

There are many other areas where angling may practised.

Angling is not allowed there, sorry.
The parks that allow angling, like Bontebok, have that as an activity on the parks pages.

If fishing is not allowed in the RTP it is certainly not a rule that is enforced. I've seen numerous anglers at De Hoop and read many trip reports of travelers fishing there.

I just Googled the topic, found a tour operator actually adversing a fishing trip to the RTP:

Last time I was there we bought a book on the RNP offices at Sendelingsdrift.

I just checked and in this publication fishing is allowed, with persmits sold at the office at Sendelingsdrift. If nothing else changed in the meantime that will still be the case.

I would think that the Parks management at Sendelingsdrift must be contacted directly to get the facts and latest status on fishing. Anyone speculating and then stating this as facts may just add to the confusion.

The Gariep river does not 'belong' to Sanparks and fishing takes place all along this river. It will almost be a contradition when fishing from the shores of the section of river along the RN park boundaries are then seen as 'conservation' - just a thought.

I am coming through/past the Richtersveld on a trip in July.

We are coming from the Canyon Roadhouse @ Fish River and will be going to Kein Aus via Sendelingsdrift. The issue is that I have two nights between the time I leave Canyon and Arrive in Kein Aus. Sendelingsdrift only has accommodation available on the first night, so my issue is: Do I go to Sendelingsdrift and then to Ai-Ais hot springs on the second night and then to Kein Aus. Or do I go to Sendelingsdrift then DeHoop on the second night and then up to Kein Aus thereby Skipping Ai-Ais?

How long does it take to go from Sendlingsdrift to De Hoop? I will be in Landrover defender
Also how long does one typically have to wait for the Pont?

I would check if the pont is operational first. It is prone to being washed away by flash floods.
That might make your decision for you.

Thanks that is something I have been wondering about. Saw in another post that it was opened last week?

I guess that is a bit of a lottery though?
