Trip to Kgalagadi end July

Unread postby ctrilles » Tue Jun 30, 2015 9:45 pm

Hello everyone!

We are travelling to Kgalagadi on 30 July (full moom) for 3 days. Is this a good time to go? Is full moon anything special for wildlife, are they maybe more active? Will it be cold and how is wildlife at that time of the year?

For months we've been trying to book in Botswana side camp sites, on different weekends, but they are always fully booked so kept on delaying the trip. So this time we decided to go anyway, and we will stay in South African camp sites around the southern area, that offer better availability. Is there any trick to get into Botswana campsites? I just find strange that they are always fully booked!

Thanks in advance for any advise you can give us!!

Dear ctrilles,

Welcome to the forums  .

I think the best way to answer all your questions is to guide you to the Kgalagadi Index where you will find various discussions on the questions that you have raised here.

Here is a link to the index with all the topics about the weather, sightings etc. that will give you a good idea what to encounter during your visit to this wonderful park.

My experience when booking is to book a year in advance to make sure that you will find accommodation and or campsites on the dates you planned to visit. Here is a link to discussion about booking on the Botswana side for easy reference.

Hope you enjoy the trip and have many wonderful sightings  .

Hi ctrilles and a warm welcome to the forum! :gflower:

End of July is still very cold.

Full moon is always a blessing, makes the most beautiful photos!  Not so sure about the animal behavior, but you will be able to see much better what is at the waterhole at night.

In my eyes Wildlife in KTP is always good  Depending on the amount of rain it should be quite dry that time of the year so animals should come down to the riverbeds for water at the waterholes, which is always nice as the predators then follow!

Enjoy the trip, I wish you many happy sightings!
