This is for all the educators out there :D

Untitled

Now class! Describe for me a flower, in poetry or prose.
A flower? Thought I, as I scratched my head and wrinkled up my nose.
I want to write of games of tag, or baseball I suppose.
I want to write of slimy frogs and slimy frog like toes.
I want to write of dragon’s fire and damsels full of woes!
A flower? What can be said of flowers hasn’t already been told?

A flurry of scratching my ears do hear of pens to paper from the rear
And scratch scratch scratching on their paper is all that I can hear.
And blank and white my book will remain; now this is what I fear.
And then a small clear bead of sweat goes trickling by my ear.
I remembered then my gift of flowers that my mother held so dear.
That drop of water on my cheek like her single heartfelt tear.

A rose is cald a rose cause that’s the culur that you sea.
It shud be cald a love cause that is surlie what will bee.

And that is what was handed in that faithful gloomy day
I tried to write some more but that was all I had to say
When class was over teacher came to see if I could stay
She probably thought I was making fun and now I’d have to pay
She said my poem was something that had really made her day
And then she smiled a teary smile and sent me on my way.

I'm open for suggestions for a title for this piece of cr@&

Selati Train Bridge
On Selati Bridge
The red sunset’s glow
Sends crisscrossed shadows
On the waters below

As day turns to night
The hot rails are cooling
As day’s last light fades
The bush birds are cooing

Beneath the old bridge
The Sabie still flows
Full moon like star shine
Makes black waters glow

The day is now done
As days long ago
Steel rusted in sun
Ghost whistle will blow

Marsh rocks and grasses
Sweet smells will arise
Sabi’s breath blowing
As Africa sighs

This I wrote a couple of years ago, while staring at a candle flame:

THE CANDLE

Sweet natal breath sweeps the candle's womb -
Bears a forceful flux to the lambent wick,
Where springs GOD's golden swirling plume;
Her fulgent, haloed, tender flame
Sublime and pure: no gloom can claim,
Through tangles, trials and trammels thick.
At times, the holy glow is dimmed,
Yet unrestrained like a gilded bride.
A chef-d'oeuvre of jewelled enchantment limned:
Bespangled prudence, fortitude,
Life's dungeons dazzled in loving mood,
And warmly sheathed in a sash's pride.
Her piercing beams of charisma bright,
Which countless lights in the murk ignite.

...and on that dark and rainy night he took another swig, and out from this poor poets head,...a bunch of junk fell splat on the floor and made a horrible mess!!
8) ...Just a crazy lead in to a crazy poem that's been buggin me and buggin me for days :wall:
well I threw all caution to the wind. No stanzas rhyme the same...the cadence is off on all accounts and it screams poor poem management...all on purpose I might add...but I had fun...so
Please be critical...I give you...

The Road Not Taken

We’ve traveled on this road we’re on
And haven’t satisfied our quest.
We’ve done the things we wanted to.
Ignoring all the rest.

So blind are we that sees the norm.
We carry on and do no harm.
Our daily lives roll on and on and on.
And then one day we look and see the tempest storm.

And on that day we wake, as if to see the new born day.
We rub our eyes and wonder how we let things get this way.
We think of all the things that could have come to us this day.
We hate the thought of change.
On our conscience this does weigh.

So get up!! It’s time!! Unfold and stretch your silver wings.
Climb out the box, the world is made of many different things.
It’s made of story books and colors, and a myriad of dreams.
Things you’ve never ever really ever seen.
It’s also made of love for one another.
Isn’t this what life does mean?

Sitting under a gnarled old tree
Mind and spirit flying free
Dreams from the night before
Knocking at tranquility's door

Night terrors in the mind
heart ache of a different kind
Monster running in ones head
bringing forth fear and dread

Then a chorus fills the air
Birds singing without a care
Knowing that the day is long
they fill it with their endless song

As the Sun sets in the west
Night owls wake, from their rest
Darkness fills the endless sky
hiding tears that people cry

Stars sparkle, shining bright
Bringing beauty to the night
Then the demons dance and play
taking joy and peace away

"The past has flown away. The coming month and year do not

exist. Ours only is the present's tiny point."

By Mahmud Shabistari

This is a quote for a Poetry contest I entered for an online group I belong to. The challenge was to write a poem based on the above quote, so my entry is as follows. Let me know what you think!

Time

Time. You call yourself the past
with colors steeped in emotion
memories cloaked in devotion,
of what has flown away.

Time. You call yourself the present
Existing only for today
very soon you'll go away
a stopping point fleeting.

Time. You call yourself the future
not quite here
but way over there
waiting to become my memory.

Tear tracks washing ancient cheek
Torn and blistered - dust coated feet
Lines of character etched so deep
Eyes closing in eternal sleep

Once so proud and full of fire
Telling legends to inspire
Children dancing round his home
Now he faces death alone

Looking back to days of gold
Wandering when he grew so old
Mind wanders to days gone by
When there was to need to cry

Human want destroyed his land
Animals killed by lustful hand
Not for food for child or wife
Just for enjoyment of taking life

Trees destroyed with wanton lust
Turning grasslands into dust
Building cities without a care
Bringing death into the air

He sits alone on Sun baked dirt
An old blanket – his only shirt
Children gone to stake a claim
Never thinking of home again

Heart beats in his sunken chest
Gray head bent towards the west
Stumbling up to face his death
Brave and proud is his last breath

Christmas is coming
What can I say?
The festivities ended
When you went away

Now the carols
And baubles of gold
Don’t mean too much
My heart is too cold

The day that we celebrate
the birth of the One
used to be joyful
and so full of fun

Now it is empty
And cold as the grave
Holly and mistletoe
I no longer save

It’s just a day
That I wish never came
Since your sad death
I am just not the same

The meaning behind it
Is still in my heart
I just cannot celebrate
With us apart

Forgive me dear friends
If I seem far away
I wish you good will
But at home I will stay

God will forgive me
This I believe
He knows that to celebrate
One must be at ease

On the night before Christmas, and all through the park
Night creatures are hunting alone in the dark
The beers and the bottles, are packed with great glee
As starlight and raindrops adorn the big tree
Braai fires are burning with logs shining bright
As people sit chatting late into the night
The wife in the kitchen with salads galore
Their husbands all talking about creatures they saw
When out of the darkness came a strange noise
Arousing young children - asleep with their toys
Down to the fence people ran in a flash
Tripping on nettles that gave them a rash
Excitement abounded on that dark night
As eyes were searching left and to right
The moon on the water rippling with gold
Lighting the night for young and the old
Then to the amazement of all at the fence
With faces distorted and all feeling tense
A movement a flicker from under a bush
The ones at the back giving others a push
Faster than lightening they flew in the air
Creatures from stories that shouldn’t be there
Dancer and Prancer with antlers held high
Leaping and pulling a sleigh to the sky
Swilling their drinks not uttering a sound
The voice of St Nick could be heard all around
With a smile on his face he called out in glee
Good people of Kruger – believe what you see
Back to the fires the people did sway
None of them knowing just what to say
The magic of Christmas had come to the park
Reindeer and sleigh had left a small mark
Back in the lodgings they climbed into beds
The hammer of drink banging into their heads
The children were calling to go for a drive
St Nick had promised them all the big five
The magic of Christmas is given new birth
Whenever St Nick visits this earth
With laughter and excitement filling the air
Children were chattering without a care
The adults looked up at the bright morning sky
Wondering about reindeer and a sleigh that can fly
No word had been spoken about bells in the night
No mention was made of the Reindeers flight
Strange stories had been told to the young by the old
That no one believed would truly unfold
Allow your hopes and dreams to roam
Let the magic of Christmas fill your hearts and home

  that was a great poem MD!!! Very clever!!
I have one from last year and thought I'd re post it as there are some new Mites that may not have seen it. :D

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the forum
The mites were all ready with cheer and decorum.
The threads were all silent, and snuggled in tight.
With visions of Cam sightings, and Buff Pie delights.

The site was bedecked with a purple array
Of some kind of flower, it looked like a spray
And out of the corner I spied with my eye
No wait…I think it is only a sty.

The Mods were asleep, all snug in their beds.
With visions of posts that had yet to be read.
And then from the roof there arose such a clatter
A splatter, a clink, what the heck was the matter.

I checked on the quizzes, I checked on the Cams
I checked Chit chat threads, I looked at the Dams.
I even looked into some long ago threads
To see if there lingered some long ago dreads.

Then to my surprise, at the top of one page
I saw a lone post, not posted in rage.
It’s song rang out clear for all Forumites to hear
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD YEAR

Christmas Gump

The day before Christmas, I’m sitting at home
Wishing that people would leave me alone
The turkey's defrosting and so is the ham
I'd much rather be having bread and some jam

Some people are coming for lunch on the day
I am so nasty, I hope they don't stay
The day of goodwill is passing me by
Time is dragging, I wish it would fly

I'll greet them all with a smile on my face
But deep in my heart I'm hiding bad grace
I love all the people that come to my home
But I would prefer to spend Christmas alone

I should be grateful that I have good friends
But I cannot wait for this season to end
The New Year is coming and soon will be here
But what will it bring, just a longing and tear

I wish I could find an island at sea
And spend New Years Eve only with me
But this is something I'd never do
So perhaps I should suffer a quick bout of flu

I am not a good person, I’m sorry to say
But no one will know, as I hide it away
With a smile on the surface, my sadness within
I am ready to let the festivities begin

indulge me one more re post, if you please
On this special night called Christmas Eve.

Long, long ago in a veldt upon the great plain there was a very wise and old beast. His flowing mane was thick with age and colored with the silver of wisdom…and he was sad. He roamed the vastness of the veldt and all in his path were in awe. His power and might were legend, and his foes were few, and yet…he was sad.
One day when the sun was laying down for her much needed sleep, and the night was beginning to wake, the Mother came to the beast and asked “Why are you so sad Lord Lion, for I have made you king of all the beasts in your world?”
And Lord Lion looked up to the Mother and said, “Mother. You have made me strong so I may defeat my enemies. You have given me eyes that see in the night and strength to hunt and kill and eat. Wherever I go your creatures bow to me, but none will lay down with me.”
At this Lord Lion looked up to the night’s shining light and with a mighty roar let loose a single great tear. The Mother seeing this felt sadness for Lord Lion and swept up that single tear and flung it to the heavens saying, “Let this tear be a star and this day be a symbol that no man, nor beast, may be sad this night.”
At this the clouded sky did clear and all the stars in the heavens did shine down upon the veldt. Long grasses turned golden and all manner of beasts arrived to join Lord Lion, in love and with no fear, and all were in awe of the Mother who gives all life.
And together with all the beasts Lord Lion felt his heart soften and knew this special time would come again, one special night when all would be safe, and could lie down together.
Tonight, look up to the heavens. Gather your loved ones near and think of Lord Lion, a star, and a tear.

Minutes are ticking swiftly by
Soon twenty ten will say goodbye
Throw all your troubles into a bin
As Father Time brings the New Year in

Live for the moment, not the past
Minutes and hours never last
Ensure each morning and every night
Is filled with peace and love and light

The days will come, the days will go
Some flying by, some seeming slow
Days with laughter some with pain
Soon to be gone – never seen again

So as the New Year comes to earth
Rejoice and celebrate its birth
We do not know what lies ahead
But love and joy is ours to spread

Wishing you all a wonderful New Year
Filled with love, peace and good health

River pounding to the ground
Drowning out all other sound
Rumbling, tumbling hurtling by
As rainbow brightens up the sky

Thundering over cliffs of grey
Destroying all that’s in its way
Pounding down on river bed
Raging water turning red

Waves of violence bouncing high
Roaring out their thunderous cry
Crashing past in twisted rage
Power taking center stage

Reveling in its destructive force
It breaks away from normal course
Surging forth with outstretched hands
Creating destruction across the lands

Tiny islands begin to show
As angry waters start to slow
Eventually running out of steam
Raging torrent turns to stream

Total madness finally dead
As water ripples along river bed
Contained between the rocky walls
Its thunder muted as it falls

Hi, My name is Zoe
Last night I paged through
An animal-book with daddy

There was this picture of a strange-looking animal
So with my eyes all big and curious I asked:
“Daddy, what is that? “

That, my girl, is (or rather was) a rhino
They were one of the animals that made up the “Big Five”
That is, the five most dangerous mammals

But daddy, I asked with a tear in my eye
Why aren’t they here anymore?
Did the other “Big Four” ate them?

A croaky, heartbroken voice answered….
No my dear, there was some …… well…
Really really cruel people who shot them
One by one with big guns
Simply because they were greedy
Now I cannot show you this animal in real life

I said a prayer, a simple prayer, that one last rhino
Can have what my name means – LIFE.
