Hi All

I am looking for a way to get involved in conservation.

I was a member of a well known wildlife charity, but got frustrated as all they seemed to care about was my money. I made numerous requests that I was willing to donate my time and whatever expertise I might have in addition to my yearly membership fee, but that just fell on deaf ears.

So, if anyone has some ideas on how I can contribute more than just money to a wildlife charity, or know of a charity that needs more than just money, please advise.

Thanks.

Hi Octavian,

Why don't you consider joining the SANParks Honorary Rangers?

Hi Octavian

JenB got in there before I could :) The Honorary Rangers is the only organization which does not take a cent of donations and fundraising for anything other than what it is intended for, including "admin fees". I have been involved with the HR's for a while now, and I can highly recommend becoming involved. It is a very fulfilling and rewarding experience.

Octavian, I certainly was not accepted into the HR's because of my money.

Octavian, the Sanparks Virtual Rangers is probably the first major cyber ranger group ....ever. It means that we can be international and flexible.

We are affiliated to the Sanparks Honorary Rangers and adhere to their code of conduct.

We are fundamentally a volunteer and fund raising body with absolute transparency. Every cent raised goes straight into conservation.

I am a professional with limited fund raising skills. I am also a financial dyslexic. What I love about the virtual rangers is that I can be effective behind my computer.

Cyberspace is the new world and our greatest challenge is the air we breathe, the sound of the birds. I have no problem putting my energy into this.

There is no profit and loss, there is only the world we love. We may do that very inefficiently, but it is all we have.

At the moment the major fund raising drive has been the Skukuza Cricket.

This has been an event that has grown through the years and has had many spin offs.

It is an example of how an idea can grow into something magic.

This is not only cyberspace.

Cyberspace is flexible and exciting. On top of that is the commitment to personal involvement.

This is a HR fund ranger activity. You don't get better.

Octavian, did you follow the link I gave you? :)

We (the Virtual region) is only one of 32 regions and as the other said, our park is the internet that is why most of our duties are done here.

You would need to do courses related to your area of interest and then you'd be able to do any duty you'd want to. Anything from manning a gate to doing drives and walks to physical field work.
Joining the H.R.'s is very rewarding indeed!

I suggest you have a look here for the region closest to you, complete the application forms and send it on to the chairman of your preferred region. They will invite you to one of their monthly meetings and you can take it from there.

See here.
I want to join the SHR's

If I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to drop me a PM. :)

Octavian, while I may be a Virtual HR, it is still a recognized region amongst the other regions. Not only that, but we as the Virtual region were awarded the Region of the Year at last year's Indaba. A HUGE achievement considering that we are still very young as a region.

We not only function on this website as our "Park" being our primary focus, but I for instance am qualified to do duty in Mapungubwe and Kruger. This takes many forms - gate duty, camp perimeter patrol, camp inspections, snare removal etc. If I do further courses (and there is a big choice) I can be one of 2 or 3 people hosting bush camps, or I could take guests on a drive or walk, or even be involved in creating fire breaks and the like.

We aren't armchair Rangers :) In fact, one of the HR's in the Virtual Region actually lives and works in the Kruger full time!

Go through the links provided for you. I'm sure there'll be something in there that will excite you 8)

Hi Guys

Thanks. I am going to give the Honorary Rangers a chance. Will go attend one of their club meetings.

It looks like the kind of thing that I am looking for.
