We're travelling to Kruger in December and wondering whether we should hire a standard car or spend a little extra and hire a Toyota Avanza. We are only two people traveling and don't need the extra space but would like the extra height.

The Avanza is not that much higher than your ordinary sedans. If you want to go higher rather hire a small SUV (Daihatsu Terios, etc). During Dec the grass is higher that the dry season which makes game spotting bit more difficult, even with big vehicles. It is advisable to go with a higher vehicle but not essential. There are more than enough lookouts and waterholes to spot game.

Hi Twilk

I have an Avanza and bought it so I could use it in Kruger as well. Easy to drive and economical. It is higher than a sedan, has good clearance space underneath and lots of space in the back for luggage.
Herman mentioned a Daihatsu Terios - my son drives one and its the same height as the Avanza.
I do recommend the Avanza.

Same question: Is it worth the extra money to hire an Avanza (OR SIMILAR) for Kruger in December?

I'm following this topic...

Rooikat - I think its worth it. The grass is longer in the summer months and its definitely an advantage to have a higher vehicle.

fee, thanks.

Next question: Does the Avanza have some sort of cover over the "boot"? (In others words, can you hide your luggage away?).

Rooitkat it doesn't. I've never had a problem with not having one and can tell you the luggage section is big.

Done the bigger and higher vehicles and normal sedans
They all suited me .
The higher does have some advantages in viewing but personaly for me not worth the extra rental amount

Hi there

Does anyone know which rental company hires out the Terios?

I have tried a few companies, but cannot find the Terios.

Please PM me as I am not sure if you are allowed to advocate a specific company on the forum.

The help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Hi Master Yoda

Thanks for the PM. I'll give this number a call and hopefully be able to get a Terios.

I have really heard good things. Height, fuel economy all only good things.

Thanks again.

Hi all,

Just to add my 2 cents' worth.

We always went "Krugerparking" in a 2000 Toyota Corolla. Had many great sightings. Sometimes the lower ride actually assists in looking under the bushes. (Especially the Mopani's up North).

I now drive a Terios (great car). There is no real difference. Kruger has always been sedan friendly.

My honest opinion would be to rent a bigger sedan such as a Corolla. Less fuel, enough space etc. It all depends on the wallet.
