We have a big plastic box that is packed with non perishables, which gets checked before we buy the fresh products. Once everything is purchased we pack the black box as we call it. If we are camping we use a hard cooler box for frozen meat and a thermo-electric cooler for all other items requiring refrigeration.

We also take cable ties for cupboards, plus a few padlocks. Padlocks are perfect for example for the Satara fridge cage, but not much good for cupboards at, say, Mopani, for which we have invented out own cable-tie lock ! A good strong pair of scissors is essential if you use cable ties - they don't do knives much good (unless they are hunting/fishing knives) - ah , could that be why all the knives provided in the camps are so very blunt??? We also have a pack of green soap and insulating tape for things like radiator problems and a container of Q20 for squeaking doors. Bottles of waterless handwash are useful and small zip-locks for loo-paper so that it doesn't get left to destroy the look of the bush (although we have our own car port-a-loo . . . .)

After many trips, our inflatable camping mattress, which I might add was ever so gingerly looked after, and rested on a camping bed, decided to deflate itself every night on our latest trip to KTP. With no desire to look for the hole (read: try to find a needle in a haystack) we have decided to make sure that we have a spare (brand new in the box) mattress on hand at all times! Some things you just cannot buy in the campsite shops!!

For tent camping we use plastic ammo crates for all non-perishable stuff. Frozen food goes into a 40l Engel. We use a Coleman Ultimate Extreme coolerbox as a fridge. We use those 500ml Spring Water disposable bottels that we collect during the year. Fill them 3/4 with water, squeeze them till the air is out and cap them. That leaves enough space for expansion when they freeze. Put a layer of frozen bottles on top of the stuff in the cooler box. The same quantity goes into the Engel. Every morning we exchange the ones in the cooler box with the ones in the Engel. We use that on out trips in KTP and the stuff in the cool box keeps cool.

When packing clothes, do you pack just enough? or do you pack for "just in case"? My SO is tired of us taking "unnecessary" things with us? Please help with some useful advice

I and The real Hugh pack just enough ( three of everything ) and it makes no difference how long we are staying. Cause One on, one being washed and one in case ..It means your bags are tidy Dont bring fiddly type clothes > T shirts are best .. One warm jacket and a cap for the sun Two pairs of shoes oro ne pair shoes snd one pair sandals and two pairs socks .. and all this fits into a small flat back pack and takes up no space . No one in the park is going to care two hoots what you are wearing .
Food well we always take some thing home made like cherry cake and biccies and one or two special things and we buy in malelane , komatiepoort and Phala and the rest in the camp shops . Take the basic of cooking stuff its amazing what one can cook in a small frying pan and small pot . Have fun TD

If possible those with young children should invite Grandmother and Grandfather along on the Kruger trip. I have seen Grandmothers settling down and organising a young family with energetic children plus Grandfather in no time. The Grandmother settled down Grandfather who got out of the car saying uh uh uh on the stoep with a big mug of coffee in front of him in between her organising and coordination.

Great thread. I'd add that cash is king in Kruger, with only Skukuza having a regular ATM as found in cities and towns. My advise would be be to draw a healthy cash balance and safeguard it. This comes in very handy when filling up the car with fuel only to find that overseas cards are not accepted for payment. Or even better when the payment machine is offline.

We always pack a tyre ‘sealer and inflator’, rather cheaply may I add.
Most times a flat tyre occur in the most inconvenient of places or at the most inconvenient of times……..like when the vehicle is fully packed and the tyre change equipment is deep down under (Ever tried unpacking and changing a tyre in a dangerous place with the whole family on the lookout?) ……… :slap:

That little tyre sealer and inflator should be pack where it is easily accessible, and used quickly and then you can safely travel to the nearest camp to unpack and do the wheel change in a much safer environment.

O and on speaking of flat tyres, don’t ever drive over dung piles lying in the road…..apart from the insects that’s having a jolly good ol time in it, it’s the perfect way of hooking up your tyres with thorns

Get outa here!

My octogenarian father was just like a child looking for animals etc and often beat the children to ther choccie reward that was on offer for the first whatever!

I am in the grandfather age now and your children are your responsibility, as mine were mine, leave the old toppies to enjoy Kruger for themselves.
