Handy hints and tips are always welcome to share with fellow visitors to the SA National Parks. I have two:

If staying in the Rondavels in Kruger always take a can opener with you.

When braaiing your meat, always have braai tongs in one hand and a good cold drink in the other – braai masters need only one hand to turn the meat.

Do you perhaps have a handy hint or favorite family tip to share?

Never forget to put your booking slips and SO s beer in the car before you leave home

Also never leave your car keys on the table outside your chalet, monkeys might just take them

In Kgalagadi, never take your eyes off your meat at the braai. The jackals don't either.........

Having had the frustration of trying to cut things (food things not spouse things)........including melted butter, a sharp knife is an essential Parketeering tool....as are bags for those stupidly small little bins that are found on your verandah which need emptying after one bottle of wine is down the hatch.

:yaya: Lolly Loo. That sharp knife that you mention is indeed an essential  – and we always forget to pack one!!!!! Trying to cut a tomato with a blunt knife is a frustrating task.

We always take a padlock with, just in case something needs locking

A few essential medicines (pain killers, throat lozenges, band aids and so on). Image

Oh, and a cricket or baseball bat. You never know what you might walk into after dark

I take a panga with me when overlanding. It is lighter and more lethal.

Always use head torches to keep your hands free to do whatever has to be done while cooking or just tidying up ,hubby says "have you ever drink pouring a drink with one hand while holding a torch?" :hmz: :hmz:

Extension lead or at least a plug adapter. We found the rondavels are short of plug sockets.

For overseas visitors with luggage limits  , the cooler bags that fold flat and are sold in most supermarkets -- you can either bring with or wait and purchase with your groceries at most RSA supermarkets. Mine travel back and forth with me as I enjoy having my Woolies & PnP bags for my shopping here in the USA. And to keep things cool, I buy the small juice boxes and freeze them -- and also freeze water bottles -- to use as ice bricks both for moves between camps and for padkos. As well, I always travel with a headlamp, a sharp knife and a can opener -- and my own combination coffeemaker/mug, a thermal mug (I can pack things inside it  ) with a Melitta cone, because I can't stand instant coffee!

And for all those electronics that we all now travel with and must constantly recharge, I have a 5 outlet international power strip, which allows me to charge the phone, the laptop and various camera batteries, but only needs one local wall socket -- for which I also need an RSA 3-prong adapater plug for the power strip. And just to be on the safe side, because (especially in KTP) there are camps with no power outlets in the chalets, I often also bring a car charger that fits my camera bateries and a car charger cable for my phone. The power strip does take up quite a lot of room, but I've found it to be invaluable!

A soft, wiggly rubber/plastic snake can be useful to chase off baboons or monkeys. We used ours once to get a baboon out of someone's car at a lookout point. They shook it at the baboon and he legged it out of the open door on the other side of the car.

You can get 250 ml packs of long life milk at Woolworths and I find them very useful to take in the car for tea/coffee instead of having larger packs of milk which would go sour on me being out of the fridge on a long drive.

When we go to the Kruger I buy little "milk pots". They come in a box of 50 for just over R30.00.In the pyramid shaped pot there is enough milk for one cup of tea/coffee. If anybody wants to know where to get them just pm me and I will tell you, I am never too sure if I am allowed to mention shops names on the forum :hmz: :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

A plug for the kitchen sink at the picnic spots is handy when a person has to do the dishes after the picnic meal.
