Welcome Irishgal.. just one word of warning this forum is very addictive to which there is no cure :D
The roads in South Africa are generally good and the double freeways very easy to drive. Much easier i might add than some of your irish ones ..Been there done that and forgot to kiss the Blarney stone.
Are you driving from Port Elizabeth to Kruger ?? If so i suggest a super route in along the N2 through KZN ( pop in to a few interesting parks there ) and then drive through Swaziland and enter the KZN at crocodile bridge . Roads are good and very safe .Plenty of good places to stay along the way
I have cousins from Canada in the country at the moment and they have remarked on how safe they feel and they were sure after various news reports that they would be Hijacked at every corner and attatcked if they put their feet out their rooms at night. Just always be careful as you would in your own country . and have a great time.

Hugh, due to time contraints I'm planning on flying from PE to Jo'burg and then on to Nelspruit and hire a car from there and drive to Orpen Gate, does that sound like a good plan?

Irishgal :D a warm, warm welcome to you. :gflower:

I have found that the Irish tend to develop a very deep understanding of South Africa. I am sure that you are going to love it.
