It’s been long since we have had some decent wide-spread soaking rains here where I live in Gauteng - it is hot and dry. Here nature is not giving any of the following signs mentioned on this thread indicating that rain is on its way soon:

1. Felt it (the coming rain) in my bones
2. Seen any cows lying in the field
3. The cat has not washed behind his ears
4. There is no sweet smell of lemon blossoms , with a lingering whiff of dark chocolate in the air (This happens in the Cape)
5. Seen any caterpillars bunching up and move higher up in the trees
6. Experienced a sudden mighty wind
7. “But my favourite is a glass filled with ice cold beer. If the moisture condenses on the glass and it runs down to the bar counter, then it is going to rain, but when the droplets just stick to the glass, you can put your umbrella away”

OK, my umbrella is packed away.

We had some, what appear, to be rain clouds over the week-end here in Gauteng, even this morning but not a drop :) . I guess it is too early for the summer rainy season to start.

On Sat morning when I woke up I could "smell" rain, there were a few clouds gathering in the distance but nothing too great, we had 2 "baby" rainstorms after 4pm the same afternoon, yesterday, lots of dark, black clouds hanging around the whole day but no rain, I also think it is too early for rain BUT I can "smell" it in the air............................

No sign or signs here in Gauteng or any smell indicating that the rains are near. Not yet. But I know the rain will come eventually as it is very hot and dry after the winter.

Only rains on the Highveld after 21 October. Still a long way to go

'Dry dry so dry
The ground the grass the sky
Parched parched the throats
Of oxen sheep and goats'

The only indication of rain is the flies that are lazy. It's hot and dusty here, as only the Free State can be. My friend's father told us that good rains only start on Paul Kruger day, 10 October every year.

That is good news Rooies, about 10 October. When travelling through the Free State at this dry time of the year and stopping for a rest in the small towns a person can obtain a lot of information regarding the upcoming rainy season from the townsfolk on the stoep of the kooperasie. They know nature's signs of rain well. I hope the mielie crop will be good this year.
