Morning Mites,

I am new to camping but have camped several times in the Kruger National Park especially on the camps which have powerpoints. i want to camp in Camps which does not have electricity like Balule and Tsendze were there is no electricity but the feeling of being in the bush is awesome.

I do have few basic needs that a camper can have when going camping, so i wanted some advices on what to have when going to camping in camps which does not have electricity like Balule and Tsendze so that one cannot feel like is lost in those camps.

The must HAVE in camps without Electricity.

Any advise will be appreciated.

Hi chungu

I would say a good light, like a headlight and a lamp, because it is very dark in those camps at night, especially if not full moon, or cloudy.

Both camps do have freezers you can store food items in.

Balule has monkeys - CLEVER monkeys, so keep everything well locked away. They opened the zip into our caravan.

I do love both camps. 8) What I have on my wish list is a small gas heater and kettle for my early morning coffee or three.

If you have a good torch for looking for owls in Tzendze, that would be great.

The three most important things probably are

1. Cooking with Gas.

2. Good lighting to move about camp, but also to light up your campsite. There are some good LED rechargebale lights on the market that will last a day or two and can be recharged on your cars cigaret lighter.

3. A high quality coolerbox (or 2) to keep drinks and food in that you cannot put in the freezer. I say 2 boxes as it is much more eficient to split your food beteen two. One for less perishables, and stuff you will open the box more often for, like drinks, and one that you keep closed most of the time for the other stuff so that the box retains the cold much longer. Drive at least one with you so that you can fill up with ice for both at the other camps.

I have two rechargeable LED lights that I can charge in my car, if need be. I just make sure that they are properly charged before I leave. The light is quite adequate for reading at night.

My daughter bought a solar powered light that uses a consul bottle. It gives off a beautiful, clear, soft light. They can be bought at Mopani camp. The price is not too different to camping stores in Gauteng. Its a lovely light to have on standby.

We tend to buy ice cubes frequently to keep perishables from going off. I also buy food, such as butternut, that keeps well in heat. Macadamias and Almonds also seem to do well in heat. Its a nice tummy filler that stops the hunger pangs.

Adding to the coolerbox, try and have most of your foodstuffs vacuum sealed, and put the rest in Ziplock bags, sucking out the last air with a straw, before sealing. As the cooler fills with water from the melting ice it my get into your food otherwise.

Also do not pour off the water (only if the cooler gets too filled, pour of some) as the ice water actually cools beter then just ice.
