I believe they thought us to be complete nuts since we had no interest in lions. Meanwhile, how were they to know that was about the 8th lot we had seen that day.

Hehehe BH. If we were in the car looking at the lions and saw you drove off, we would have looked at each other and said: "Een blithem gesien, allie blithems gesien" (seen one, seen all).

Thats the excuse used by someone we once invited with us to a game reserve. But we had to go in seperate cars. So when we got to the accomodation and we asked him why he did not stop for the BLACK rhino, that was his (by now famous or infamous?) response was.

But then we figured later that either they did not see it, or they did not know what it was. Because they kept telling us about all the buffaloes they were seeing. And we saw NONE! And then one morning they stopped and pointed - VERY proud to show us a pride of buffaloes they spotted that we never see. Ja ja ja... you guessed it: Wildebeest!!! :wall: So now we also call Wildebeest "mini-Buffaloes"!

Maybe what I will do if it so happens that on a particular trip (heavans forbid) it happens that my Kudu-bokkies dont wanna show themselves to me, I will start to call Impalas mini-Kudus...

PS: But then I just realised I am not to make fun of these poor people that did not know better, because my knowledge of birds is so shoooooocccckkkkking, I had to Google "gymnogene" so find out what it is  Hubby is very patient trying to teach me about birdies, but I think the part of my brain that is supposed to learn about birds, is missing!

 @ Inyati.

I have a very good friend who has the most amazing eyesight. 'Bout 10 years ago in the Pilanesberg he stopped us and pointed to a tree so far away, I had difficulty seeing the tree. Told us there was a gymnogene in the tree. Had to take his word for it.

And then a couple of years later, inthe KNP, he pointed out some lions in between two trees that I could hardly see even with Binocs. I always wondered what how he would have reacted if I said "you're lion".

Hello All!!

A few of our family rituals when visiting the Kruger are:

have to have chicken mayo rolls for the drive to Kruger from Durbs

before we enter into the park we all have to guess what the first animal sighting will be and the person to win does not have to make the braai that evening and just chills out

always have to have coffee and rusks!!

and EVERYONE has their first drink at 7am - sets the tone for the rest of the day...

No matter what, I need to pop into the loo and smell the thatch.

The thatch brings smiles, feelings.. and if you don't understand this post, maybe you need to stand in a loo.

After entering Kruger, we keep the camera packed until the first stop. That ensures a great welcome!

After entering Kgalagadi, I go to KG's office to say 'Hi'.

MM the smell of thatch is one of our smells of Africa. There is NOWHERE in Australia that has thatch. Pretend Balinese pool thatch things DO NOT COUNT

I don't really have any superstitions but we are developing a few rituals as the trips increase. :D

Thanks for opening this again. Another ritual that is reserved for Kruger only is beer and schnaps around the fire. A gulp of beer followed by a sip of schnaps.
