Article found in the Beeld this morning.

Article in Afrikaans:

Two young children hang out of their vehicle in the Kruger National Park and take photos of two lions of approximately 3 m away on the road lie.

The male swung his tail angrily . The next moment, he and the female roaringly stood up and walked away .

Gert de Koker Sunday a video of the incident uploaded to YouTube .

By late last night the video is almost 8,000 times viewed .

While a man on the video to see how the children and other people in surrounding cars to hang out their car windows , this message appeared on the screen : " Notice how the lion 's tail swings , the first sign that he was unhappy . "

Suddenly the lions roaring on . The sound of someone taking in their breath on the video is clearly heard .

The lions then turn around and walk away .

At the end of the video is the message that visitors for their own safety in their vehicles should stay . Neither a box on the video reads: " Will you ever stop to think of your vehicle to lean to some lions ? "

A lion may feel threatened because of this kind of action and also so close down .

The lion may even think it's his next meal , the Rey Thakhuli , SANParks spokesperson said.

Larenty Alex , a lion expert at the Lion Park on the West Rand , said lions are predators . " If you give a lion, an opportunity to attack , he will . "

The public does not realize how quickly a lion can move . " A lion may be 100 m in six seconds covers . "

Thakhuli the conduct of the visitors to the park condemned .

" The rules clearly outlines that people with windows can not protrude . Unfortunately, some people do not follow the rules , until something happens . "

Vehicles should take at least 15 m away from animals be enough room to move .

Under no circumstances may persons from their vehicles climb, he said .

The public should such " irresponsible " actions by SANParks report , has asked Thakhuli .

" People who see it , it must immediately report the perpetrators so that we could be fined or next time access to SANParks refuse . "

Write offenders' registration numbers down , he asked .

The vehicle registration number is clearly visible, what official steps are/have been taken?

I agree 100% with you gmlsmit but unfortunately it seems like Sanparks can only fine someone if a formal complaint has been filed by an eye witness. It was the same story with the idiots in the recent elephant incident.
The eye witness did not want to file a formal complaint and nothing further was done.

But if the licence plate is visible it should be enough.

I also thought so .. until I read this BB

ReyT wrote:We would also like to bring to your attention that without a written statement from a complainant, SANParks cannot charge a member of the public, who commits an offence as is in this case and many others. SANParks would like to encourage members of the public to follow through the entire process of reporting the offenders. By law a traffic officer who writes out an Sec 56 or Sec J534 without a statement cannot testify in court regarding the matter , because it is regarded as hearsay.

Unfortunately usage of photos or video material is not permissible in court, without a warrant notification giving you authorization to take a photo or video material. In essence a witness is needed to physically testify in court. However SANParks encourages park users to report the matter at any gate prior to the culprit exiting the park.

So whomever took the video will need to testify and give a statement. However, I'm sure they will get a fine posted to them for protruding.

In the article the Sanparks spokesperson said that those breaking the law in the SANPARKS can either be fined or refused entry to Sanparks in the future. Please start implementing the latter sanction for misconduct in the SA National Parks please. These idiots does not belong in a place where wildlife an nature should be respected and protected.

Doesn't SANParks have a 'right of admission' policy.

If so there should be a register of registrations on non admissable vehicles.

I agree 100% with you Grantmissy, they need to find the culprits and ban them.
The problem with the registration numbers though is that there is a host of rented vehicles in the park and despite the economic situation in the country people buy new cars every 6 months.

It is imperative that the idiots are reported immediately and fined before they leave the park so their ID / passport numbers goes onto a database. I found that recently you have to give your ID number at the entrance gate, and if there is a person in the car on that list, sorry for him. No entry

I must say I like the fact that the media is giving some extensive coverage on the continued disregard for rules within KNP:

Thanks for the article Stephan Groen :)

I especially like this statement

ReyT wrote:“We have taken action before to reported incidents with fines between R500 and R5 000 being issued. In some instances we have in fact banned people from coming to the park. But we need people to report the incidents before we can do something,” Thakhuli said
