Hello everyone
When you are in KNP or anywhere remote for that matter, what do you do with the photographs on your SD card? I mean, if you become a bit frenzied, you will need to clear up the card and put the images somewhere? I have IPad but it's only 16GB. I have an Samsung S4 - also not big space. I dont feel like taking my laptop along.

Cheers - Ed

Hi Ed

I take my laptop and a portable drive and make sure I have two copies of the pics; either on laptop and portable drive, or card and laptop.

I have had that horrible sinking feeling of my hard drive crashing while in KNP and loosing a set of pics, so I will never not have two copies of photos until I get home and can back up.

Take your laptop along :D

I also bring both laptop and portable drive with -- despite travelling from overseas, wich means that both weight and space in my luggage are prime considerations. Better to be safe than sorry IMO. So I agree with DB, bring your laptop!

Moobox, I take my laptop, but for other reasons. I have seen too many sad tales on the forum about lost images. It is worth having a back up.

I have bought an extra SD card just in case I run out of space.
A few years ago it did happen to me, and I the photographic dept in Skukuza loaded my pics on to a cd for me.
Haven't noticed if that department is still active in the camp shop.

Thanks folks. As far as carting the computer along all over, I suspected that might be the answer but still I'm not so keen. And as for the Fee's answer, I think that ODP or some other photographic outfit would do well to offer some sort of service at camps doing that sort of thing. So, let me ask another question. And I'm sorry if the answer is published or has been provided before. What is the state of wi-fi in KNP? Because if there is wi-fi or some other access to the webz, then it would be possible (albeit laborious) to download stuff to dropbox, google+, irista, etc..., using phone or tablet or wi-fi equipped camera. Does anyone do it that way?

Cheers - Ed

I believe you can pay for wifi time at Mopani. I am not sure of the status currently at Lower Sabie and Skukuza. But it is probably an expensive way, at this stage to save your pics.

In the rest of the camps, one has to foot the bill for your own data connection via a cellphone provider, and the speed of uploads is just way to slow to even contemplate saving pics in the cloud.

Moobox, what I really don't understand is why you are so reluctant to "cart the computer all over"? :hmz: After all, you only have to bring it with from Benoni, whereas I bring mine all the way from the USA, despite its wieght and the space it takes. I suppose that we all have different priorities, but I really can't see why bringing yours with would be such a burden?

Hey arks, you're right. But it is a bit of bulk I dont want with me and also a bit of a link to my job. Also, I'd like all the stuff in one bag so less to keep an eye on. But now I'm thinking I'll get one of these wi-drive jobbies. I've got a EOS 70D which has wi-fi and I need to work that little lot out and I think I'm set. Just not sure of the camera connect to the drive. But I'm sure my phone or my tablet will and it may be a two-step process.

Morning anne-Marie,

It's a portable hard drive which allows to save photos from your camera without the use of a computer.
This device support a variety of memory card formats (CF,SD,SDHC,SDXC).
The system includes an internal recheargable battery and can be used when you have no power in the wilderness camps for example.Very easy to use ,you just insert your memory card in the slot on the left side of the device. You can choose the capacity of the hard disk you will install in this portable storage. You even have a tiny screen (stamp size) to preview the photos. Then back home, I transfer my data to my computer.
I bought it at a professionnal Photo shop in Paris. It was not cheap but very easy to travel with .It's the size of an external hard disk (size of a book)
If you want more information please PM

I have used something similar (Vosonic X-drive) to what Goronta describes in the past, but prefer the laptop as it is too hard (at least for me) to review the downloaded images on the tiny X-drive screen.
