Or " accidentally " drop it off a bridge or something , let a truck drive over it , and if that little knob still doesn't work , then you can make an honest claim from insurance

Great idea, RR ... please send the deposit as soon as possible. A daughter at high school, car repairs, Kruger-Park trips, and increasing petrol prices do little to fund a real camera.

Well , then do it early Monday morning so that you have lots of time to forget the fine details of what actually happened

OWN, sorry but i cant seem to know what camera you are using?

and also where you live?

If you live in Johannesburg, and use a Nikon, you can take it to Nikon direct and they should be able to look at it and give you a quote while you are there, they are based in Centurion.

If you use Canon, then you take it to Cameratek and they might be able to do the same although they arent as brialliant as Nikon even though im a Canon man. They based in Randburg

They have branches in most major cities too
I try my best and that's what matters I hope.

Well, I would say don't use water! Some sort of quickly evaporating spirit might work. But avoid a liquid fix.
A camera club member may be able come up with a tested suggestion. Or email Sony themselves.
Holding thumbs for you. :cam:

I see that Gerarddb (from Pretoria though) had a hand in fixing Lourens' camera.

Thank you for the information, Timbo and Kite.

I should have given an update earlier on what happened subsequent to last year. I took the camera (a Sony) to a few places, but because they didn't specialise in Sony, they refused to look at it. Then I found a private gentleman who has been repairing all sorts of cameras for decades and tried him. I thought the dial could just be popped off, the gunk cleaned, and the dial popped back on (shows you what I know about cams!) He explained that the dial, which has a clicker mechanism, had to be stripped down entirely. He did this, but told me that Sony themselves were selfish about supplying parts to anyone else, including him, so he said that a more comprehensive repair would cost more than a thousand rand.

I was contemplating purchasing a new camera, or just living with one dial-setting on the cam, when we discovered that, once he had put the cam back together again, his action of stripping the mechanism down had actually loosened some of that gunk! The result is that the dial is fully operational again and I still have my "old" Sony - old, these, days is more than five years - which I enjoy thoroughly, even though it isn't a DSLR.

The mites here originally gave some creative suggestions - including a stream of warm water and steam - to loosen the gunk, but I was too nervous to try most of them.

The moral of the story is: DON'T EAT ANYTHING STICKY WITH YOUR CAMERA BELOW YOUR MOUTH!
