Sigma 120-400 OS HSM lens

Unread postby Fizzpop » Thu Dec 09, 2010 4:47 pm

Hi there everyone...

I have just bought the new canon 60D, really awesome camera,

However, as much as I would like a canon 100-400, the budget is just not there! :(

I am looking at the Sigma 120-400 , purely on price. General reviews on Photo Sites are positive.

Is anyone out there used/ using one, particular for Wildlife photography?

Cheers

Hi

Have you considered the Sigma 150-500mm?I have the 150-500mm and for the price I would not go any other way.The OS bit slow sometimes with birds in flight or moving objects but still ok.

So the 120-400 -R8 999

and the 150-500 -R12 999 on sacamera

so its a R4000 difference. If you have R12 999 I would take the 150-500 and sure somewhere you can get it cheaper or maybe second hand?Check outdoorphoto there is 1 for canon going for R8500.

Hope I have helped

Thanks.

Your help and info on this much appreciated.

I have spent so much web time recently checking prices and comparisons, I am having dreams about it :)

Based on everything, this morning I have ordered a new Sigma 120-400 from USA, and should be with me before Xmas.
Paid in total R7100, all incl, so its not too excessive,
but I have also eventually had to buy what I could best afford.

Will post some experiences and samples with this lens when I get it, and try out in the KNP in January

Cheers

Hi there

Bought the Lens direct via the Internet, in Nov 2010

Cost, was really worthwhile. And hassle free. With the strength of Rand, it is now R1000 cheaper than when I bought it!

I can assure you, the Lens is worth every cent.

Very excited with it, and believe the photos I have achieved are some of my sharpest and best to date.

I am using it with a Canon 60D. Seems to be a great combo. Lens works well and has Auto focus with the Video mode!

Response and focus are very quick, and no lag noticed.
USM and stabiliser functions work perfectly well with Camera.

Yes it is slightly heavy, but I use a good quality Monopod attached to Lens, and this way when carrying take weight off mount,(as carry by the "short" Monopod, and not camera).

But using a bean bag or Pillow rest, results are what i was hoping for.

I know the Canon 100-400 fans are going to be up in arms, but I believe that we are paying a much higher premium than one should for such Lenses?

Highly recommended. Go for it.

If you want details where I bought from, send me PM.

Cheers

What body were you using before the 60D? so basically your gear is 60D with the Sigma 120-400 only? To be completely honest i think that 90% of good photos comes down to how much one knows about his / her gear. I had the sigma 150-500 and got some ok photos and then decided to sell it and get myself the 400L prime to get better photo's. Yes they were a little sharper but it all comes down to practice practice practice! Looking forward to seeing some pictures.

Hi Fizzpop
I also just gone through the same quandary of which lens to buy for our visits to the parks. I soooooo wanted a Canon lens but after my budget was slashed decided to buy the Sigma 120-400. I got the lens two weeks ago and tried it out in Addo that weekend and I was very impressed with it.
It takes a little getting used to and using it in low light is a challenge but I love challenges. I used it attached to a monopod the entire time in the park, even in the car! Personally I found using a monopod easier than using a beanbag.
Some of my results:

Spending 10 days in Kruger next month, so I can't wait to see the results.

Hi Massimo

Thanks for your comments.

I was using an Olympus E3, with a 300mm zoom, at 4/3s translate to 600mm on standard.

Great Camera, and superb Zuiko Lenses, still 100%.(My Teenage Daughter has now nationalised :naughty: )
But decided I was not happy with direction Olympus were going, and opted for a Canon 60D, before spending any more money on lenses.

I agree totally on your view on the Camera, Lens and the Monkey behind the viewfinder  .

Over the years, it has been quite a progression for me.

Luckily I grew up using 35mm Manuel and Autofocus SLRS, so I did learn hard and expensive lessons of quality over quantity,
and what settings to use, and not just rely on Point and click... 8)

Now, can someone please point out a link as to how to upload to the Forum pages, I will be happy to oblige with some recent photos.

Cheers

The above Cheetah photo was taken through my Windscreen, hence the "blue" tinge.
