Matt's Day Trip to KNP : 10 June 2006

Unread postby matthew » Mon Jun 12, 2006 1:14 pm

Perhaps I should start right at the beginning- it always seems like a good idea!
I tip-toed out of work on Friday at about 16.00 in an attempt to beat the traffic- ha ha ha. Finally got passed Benoni at about 18.15, and duly arrived in Nelspruit to a well-deserved cold one and a cigar- Thanks dad.

Having read Dirk's posts we decided to enter the park at Phabeni gate, travel along the S3, S4, H11, S65 and make our way from there to Skukuza where we would plot our next move.

It was amazing to be breathing in the KNP air again- although it was rather refridgerated!
The S3 is fantastic, its thick, bushy and absolutely enticing in the early morning. We saw some impala, duiker and bushbuck- including a lightie no more than a foot high.

The S65 next, hoping for a glimpse of the 7 cheetah- but no luck although we saw our first ellies and from there- to skukuza. The decision was made to meander up the H1-2 and then duck up the S36 to Nhlanguleni- where things started hotting up.

Thank you for the kind comments
Okay moving on.
After removing our jerseys rather prematurely at Skukuza we made our way up the S36, where we had our first "lekker" sighting:

There was a herd of about 14 of them and while the rest, including a massive male carried on marching into the bush, this one and his friend (wearing a collar) were very relaxed and stuck around long enough for a photo.

From here onwards- to Lugmag dam and we were greated by this: a herd of about 400 buffs making their way through...

It doesn't end here- the exciting finale is on its way...

Thaks guys- time for the final instalment- I hope you have enjoyed reading so far.
From Nhlanguleni it was decided to return to the main road via the Vutomi sand road- the S33. So after a nice cold one, we took our jerseys off again (for good this time) and set off.

A little insert here- this trip was for the one and only purpose of spending time with my dad, as we have not seen each other for a while. We were very focussed on catching up while just enjoying being in the bush. So much so that when we saw this animal, my dad stopped the car and finished his story before reversing- I don’t think it needs to be said that not many words were spoken while watching this good looking fella.

He was lying down when we first reversed, sat up to look at us when we reversed but then returned to la-la land. Another vehicle arrived and he decided that it was getting a bit crowded and that it was time to leave.
