We decided to go to the northern direction on that day (04.05.) to Union’s End.But to make a small detour south to Marie se draai , before continuing to the north.
On the way we saw this Springbock with some funny decorations on the head  .
His fellow Springbocks do not look very pleased.
And even left.

Just after the turnoff to Marie se Draai we saw this bird on one of the trees.

Image

A couple in a 4x4 told us, that there was a Martial Eagle in one of the trees close to the road.
But that the road further on was quite impassable (they saw that on the sunset drive the night before) and they would not dare to drive though the water, although driving a 4x4.
So we decided to drive just up to the water and than turned around.

Marie se Draai was busy early in the morning.Ostriches , Jackals and of course Gemsbock.

Going north the grass was really high on the sides of the road, so even with the Sharan we had some difficulties to have a proper view.
But again there was a lot to see.
We just went up to Lijersdraai Picnic Spot ( and saved the rest of the trip to Unions End for the next time in KTP )
Still there was a lot to see.

And for the first time Namaqua Doves.

I really like Kori Bustards, they are quite impressive.
We sometimes managed to see them close to the roads. But most of the times they were too shy and quickly moved away into higher grass.
They are even more impressive while being in flight.
Seeing them on the ground makes it even harder to imagine that they are able to fly at all.

Image

Image

I never thought that we would see Butterflies in the Kalahari but we saw them in their hundreds.
They were soaking up the water from every puddle on the road. And were really beautiful to watch.

Image

This little guy crossed the road right in front our car and wasn’t amused at all , that we stopped and took a photo. In fact he was really upset and tried to chase us away.

Hello!

I swapped all my pics to photobucket and reduced them in size.
I would like to apologize to everyone who experiences difficulties reading my report and viewing the pics due to size of the photos and speed of the website.
It might be much easier now ( especially for forumites still using dial-up connections) .

I hope you still like the pics (as they might suffer a bit in quality due to the reduction of size )

Katy

However the pics ( and even more of them) can be still seen in full size at my flickr site.

( Still more to come.... )

The landscapes througout the park are so diverse , and you never get bored while driving .
Image.
This guy seems to have sore feets (cooling them in the water).
Image
Image

Or he just wants to have a look if there is something edible in the water.

Not just the wildebeest , but all the animals seem to enjoy that there is still enough water on the roads for them to drink.

KTP is a great place to see Snakes.
We never managed to see so many before. In Kruger we had a Spotted Bush Snake (right above me in the tree, when I started to prepare the braai) and a Black Mamba in a tree on a Night Drive (and our guide Paul had to point it out  ).
While driving in KTP they are clearly visible when on the roads ( I don’t know who it can possibly happen to run over a Puff Adder by accident  ).
The most impressive one was this Cape Cobra north of Nossob Rest Camp.
A really beautiful Snake, glistening in the sun.

Image

She did not like it very much when we stopped to take this photo.

Image

The Hide at Nossob is really beautiful, easily reached through a safe passway .From there you have a wonderful view onto the River and a Waterhole.

Image

Image

On that evening someone at the Hide even discovered an African Wildcat underneath one of the trees, but unfortunately too far away to make any pics ( especially with the fast fading light)

The next morning (05.05.) we wanted to go to the southern direction , but as there had been Cheetah sightings at Kwang Waterhole in the north of Nossob Rest Camp.We changed our minds and went to that direction ( we were going South the next day anyway).
Quite shortly after the Camp gate a male Lion crossed the road just a few metres in front of our car.
What a magnificent sight. He was roaring all the time and you though the sound makes the earth tremble. We often heard lions before in Kruger, but always far away.We never imagined it beeing that loud. I can still feel it just watching the pics.
Not a bad start for a new day in KTP. 8)
The Lion was followed by 6-7 Jackals just running back and forth .

Image

Image

Image

Image

They were making sounds that we never heard before.( I think Dinky Bird heard that sound as well while beeing on the morning walk with Jannie, it’s the warning call of the Jackals).
The Lion simply ignored them.

Image

I felt as if he was looking right into the lens of my camera

Thank you Penni! :D

@ Cees
You definitely have to go to KTP again. And rather stay two weeks.

So here is some more:

We saw a lot of animals while driving around ,taking our time to appreciate the landscape and to enjoy KTP.
Sometimes we just stopped at one of the waterholes and waited in our car until something happened.
North of Nossob was this very nice waterhole (Quap Waterhole). It was quite easy to see Pigeons, Sandgrouses and Jackals having a drink.

Some more pics of the smaller inhabitants of KTP:

Try to not drive over Tsamma Melons that are lying in the middle of the road , you never know if there is still a very hungry mouse having lunch....

Image

But not only mice do like them, this little guy needed a Melon with a view.

Image

....and always check the trees, not just for LITS!
I discovered this Lizard (?) at Dikbaardskolk Picnic Spot.

Image

And again a Snake, not very big but pretty.

This was 'our' bungalow at Nossob Rest Camp ,well the part well hidden behind the branches of the tree (but it was the better angle to take that pic  ).
Very nice, recently refurbished with a well equipped kitchen.

Image

A Crimson-Breasted Shrike ( the first decent photo I was able to take). He was hopping around while we waited for our sunset drive.

Image

A very nice ( but again very cold) Sunset Drive , and again with Andre.
We saw a lot ,Cape Foxes, Owls, Secretay Birds, Ostriches, Bat-Eared Foxes.
Suddenly we heared the warning calls of the Jackals again and soon after that we heard Lions having a fight.Right in the river bed. We were able to see their eyes with the spot-lights. Their eyes , and the eyes of a Springbok, lying down close to that scene and not even making the attempt to run away.
But nothing happened to him.....
And just before we reached the entrance gate to the camp a Lioness crossed the road just few metres in front of the car.

Image

(On the Sunset Drive from Nossob rest Camp)

A Secretary Bird trying to find a comfortable place for the night.

Thanx Bert!
I always try not to take any sunset pics , but..........

Well today (06.05.) we made our way back south.
Saying a sad goodbye to Nossob, but looking forward to our next stop ( the first wilderness camps that we are staying at).

Thanx Jose!
Sorry , a bit busy during the last few days

There are always so many things to discover on the way like this track in the sand.

Image

We saw these Vultures next to a kill ( we could not really see what it was).
Unfortunately I missed the moment a Jackal chased away these Vultures, he virtually jumped up into the air to attack the birds  .A really awesome sight. But it was nevertheless great to see them fly away.

Image

At one of our stops at the waterholes, we could see one of these Gemsboks, they are so beautiful.

Image

During our time at KTP we saw more and more baby Springboks. Some times they were just a few days old.
And we loved them as much as the baby Impalas in Kruger, soooo cute. 8)

So on our way from Nossob to Killiekrankie we passed again through Twee Rivieren to stock up on fuel and food.I forgot to take a pic of the reception on our first day.

But here it is, the reception of Twee Rivieren:

Image

Not only the Whistling Rats and Squirrels are always fun to watch, but as well all the Mongooses:

Image

We were really a bit proud that we discovered this Giant Eagle Owl in the branches of the tree while driving by in the car. 8)
(It was sitting quite high in the tree and was very well camouflaged )
