3 Camps 31 Days in Kruger Park

While visiting Kruger Park during May and June 2012 (see Best Ever 38 Days in Kruger) we have witnessed incredible sightings.
I will never forget the once in a lifetime sighting of the lions with the buffalo carcass and the angry elephants near Punda Maria …..!

During our visit to KNP in Aug and Sept 2013 we were once again treated to the best of Kruger. It was not the sightings of 75 lions, 8 leopards, 4 cheetah that we will remember the most, but being in this incredible place: Kruger National Park. What we will remember is the company of our children and friends, watching birds and animals, sitting at the waterholes fascinated by animal behavior ………

We stayed at Skukuza, Satara and Lower Sabie.
We were fortunate to have friends also staying at Skukuza and Satara while we were there. Two of our sons also visited us for a few days before returning to London and Cape Town.

I will post photos of our most special and memorable sightings. Unfortunately we also had a heartbreaking experience.
But looking on the bright side I was fortunate to be on the very, very best night drive one could wish for ……….

We were concerned that these lion sightings on our first day in KNP would be our last!!!!!!

During our previous visits to KNP we had great sightings on the S65.
This time we had an amazing (double) sighting!

There was a mother cheetah with her 3 young ones. We have seen cheetahs before, but little ones like these were a first. They are so cute with that inquisitive look.
There were 2 cars in front and 2 cars behind us. We were so focused on the cheetahs that we did not immediately see the 2 ellies behind us racing down the road towards the cars!! We held our breath ….. They suddenly stopped and turned away from the cars. What a relief!! What a great sighting!!!!

The Traffic Block!!!

Image

This is what it looks like when there are 3 leopards with an impala carcass not more than 300m where 8 lions guard a waterbuck carcass!!!!
It was too far for good photos. It was not possible to capture all the lions on one photo. On these photos you can see the 3 leopards (1 at the carcass and the other 2 on the hill) and a few lions.
Although there were a lot of cars it was possible to see both the lions and the leopards. This does not happen very often!!
The male lion was guarding the waterbuck carcass. When a lioness with 2 younger lions tried to get near the carcass the male was aggressive and chased them away.
In the meantime the leopards were eating their catch. Suddenly two of the three leopards run up the little hill. At first we didn’t know what scared them. When we spotted the lions so close to the leopards we realized that they were very much aware of the lions.

Lake Panic

When we visited Lake Panic it was not the usual silent hiding. There were ellies at Lake Panic!!! They seemed upset and made quite a noise.
It was strange to see ellies at Lake Panic.
The previous year my son took a photo of an ellie standing dead still just outside the entrance to Lake Panic. I never even saw that ellie.
He only showed us the photo when we were in the safety of our car! That was scary.

S100. The 5 most beautiful male lions.

We were told there were 5 male lions on the S100. We missed them, but had a glimpse of 1 male lion in a distance. We were disappointed.
One of those things: some you see, some you don’t. But we would never have guessed that the 5 lions eventually would cross our path!

Image

Before going back to camp we went for a final drive on the S100. And there they were: 5 beautiful, beautiful lions!!!!!!
I wish I knew more about them. Are they brothers or maybe a father and his sons?
What a formidable hunting team they must be ……..

This will always be one of our very special sightings. They are magnificent!!!!
While posting this I can not stop looking at them .......

Ellies at Nsemani Dam

Watching ellies at a waterhole is always entertaining. These ellies had a great time playing and rolling in the water. It was such a pleasure to watch the baby digging his little trunk into the mud and rolling in the water. Then the matriarg appeared and suddenly all the ellies in this playgroup stood up, formed a line and walked away. But one little one kept on playing in the water. The matriarg stood in front of the little one, said something in ellie language and the little one immediately got up and followed the rest of the herd. That was incredible. Fortunately we recorded this on video.

On another day while sitting at the Nsemani Dam there was suddenly a big shadow next to our car. When I looked over my shoulder a HUGE ellie was very near our car. It is amazing how an ellie suddenly can appear from nowhere. He walked to the dam and drank water. Then he took a “shortcut” and crossed the road right in front of a car!!! I am sure the people in that car were very concerned!!

But we were rewarded by this little jackal who was very nervous.

Wilddogs near Nsemani Dam

We were driving to the Nsemani Dam when we saw a few cars parked near the dam. Then there was a movement in the grass. Wild dogs!!! The wild dogs were lying in the grass and not very visible. Then they start to play and were more visible. Suddenly they were alert and ran towards the road. We couldn’t believe our luck. Wild dogs so close! Somebody told us there was a leopard nearby. That must be the reason why the wild dogs suddenly took off. What a special way to end a day.
It was only the second time I have seen wild dogs, and a first for my son.

Big 5 Day
Image

Today we drove on the H1-4 to Olifants Camp. The view from the lookout area is one of the best in the Kruger.

Image

A few km from Satara we saw a leopard in a tree. (LIT) It looked as if he was going to be there forever. Luckily he stood up and after a while jumped down and walked to the other side of the road. Only to jump into another tree. He was watching a few ostriches!!! Wonder what the leppie was thinking ……??

While eating lunch we talked about the animals we saw during our drive to Olifants. If we can only see a lion then we can tick off the Big 5.
On our way back about 1 km from Satara we found our lion! Not one but two.

Family of ostriches H1-4. There were 8 little ones. Very cute!!! How do they survive in the wild?

Lower Sabie: 11 days

We are looking forward to our stay at Lower Sabie.
With a caravan it is not easy to stop for animal viewing.
But it turned out to be a wonderful drive. It was a Big 5 day!!!!

On our way to LS the following: A very big herd of buffalo, rhino, 2 lions unfortunately too deep in the bush for good photos, lovely ellies and the prize was a leopard in the tree very near LS. Our second LIT.

We set up camp under a lovely tree. Then I heard “piet kokkewiet”. I searched the trees nearby until I found him.
A Dark-capped Bulbul.

Image

Each morning we were awakened by the sound of this bird. Beautiful music compared to an alarmclock!!!

Little monsters around our camp ………

Image

Image

Our first night at LS. It is so quiet, only the sound of the hippos can be heard ……
What an amazing place to be.

We went to Komatiepoort to buy supplies. When we re-enter the gate at CB it felt like heaven.
I could stay in Kruger forever …………….

On our way to Crocodile Bridge we encountered 4 of the Big 5!!!!!
No lions today……

A mother and her 2 little warthogs. Because they ran so fast it always is difficult to photograph them.

Image
I will write about this family in one of my next posts.

A few cars caused a traffic jam. There was a leopard in the bush! Everyone was waiting and hoping that this leopard will show himself. We only had a glimpse of him before we continued to CB.

I have never seen hippos run, but I know they are very, very fast.
We watched a few hippos in the water on the opposite side of the Sunset Dam. Suddenly one hippo got out of the water and ran into the bush. A second hippo followed the first one. We had no idea what made them run. Then suddenly the one hippo came rushing out of the bush on our right side of the dam. For a moment I thought our car was going to be in his way!!!!! Fortunately he ran straight for the water with the second hippo following him. It was only a minute or two after they disappeared into the bush before they reappeared. They were not fighting in the water. Why they suddenly took off in such a hurry we do not know. They looked very intimidating when they rushed out of the bush. I certainly do not want to be in their way.

RHINO:

I dedicated a post to the rhino during our previous visit in 2012. I would like to do the same again. Whenever we saw rhino I felt so sad.
Although these beautiful animals are enormous they are not capable to defend themselves against poachers.

I read in WILD, Summer 2013/2014, p. 33 that during 2012 668 rhinos were killed and during this year (2013) 860. It breaks my heart.
How can this happen? Will all rhinos eventually be killed?

Whenever we saw a rhino we were very exited. But we could not help wondering if one of these rhino will be the next to be brutally killed.
It is an unbearable thought ……………
