The Egyptian Goose is in fact a White-faced Duck, as Arks fortunately noticed! I was checking out the cute little ones, and missed the mom's identity Umtali1!

Thanks for the bigger bus. Lots of elbow room now

Love the birds and the shots from the north. We'll be there in a few months. I wonder what this January and February will bring. :hmz:

Thank you for your comments. Let's hope the north has a few seasons to recover.

Some really good photographs here, wish I was at any one of those hides or picnic spots right now.
There is a debate going on about the duck id, now I am not sure myself, since I am at work and don't have my bird book with me, I cant look it up now. I can however in the mean time assure you that it is definitely not Image

Oh my! Then it is a female African Shelduck, (of course, with the little ones around), because the male has a grey head. She differs from the Egyptian Goose as follows, according to Roberts' Multimedia Birds of Southern Africa:

More richly coloured than Egyptian Goose and lacks brown eye patch and breast spot; under parts russet, not grey; bill and legs darker. In flight, lacks black line across upper wing coverts and is much more russet below.

Thanks naomi c!

Agreed  my book calls them "South African Shellduck"

Both books I use do not show the whole head as white as in the picture but they do say in the text "female has a white face(extent of white varies considerably)"

Well the fundi :cam: SO has gone looking for the missing photos
(something to do with flash corruption  ) and has come up with these clarifications ...

The African Shelduck mom and her family at the waters edge
Image

and her mate
Image

and the ducklings by themselves - now that would make an id challenge 8)
Image

Now the real Egyptian Geese in that days birdlist ...
