Elephants

People often ask us why we keep on coming back to Africa and Sanparks. For some it seems that once you’ve seen any of the big 5 and a few other creatures, that’s it. You don’t need to see any more. They don’t appear to understand that every day and each situation is different.

For that reason, we never tire of watching elephants. They have such an incredible family structure in which they all look out for each other. You just have to see how they protect the babies to realise that there is a very strong family bond.

Image

Image

The siblings or cousins go off to drink on their own when they can’t reach over the top of the tank at Talamati. Just one big happy family on a picnic!

Image

As in any family you have the really naughty youngsters who come along and cause chaos with their trumpeting, ears flapping and trunks waving. Anything close by just scatters! (We’ll be showing a clip of that behaviour when we visit Talamati). We were in hysterics as we watched.

Elephants seem to be at home in the water as much as they are on land. It is so obvious how much they enjoy wallowing and splashing and snorkelling. Then you have the odd scrap when two adolescents argue over a pool, testing each other’s strength.

Image

When you are that big, you have to find a large enough place for a scratch. Trees are just the thing!

Image

And then just the size of the beast….. They are the king of the road…

Image

Image

They can move so quietly and melt away into the bush. How do they do it?!

We have included a couple of videos to illustrate what we have just been talking about. Hope you will have time to chill and watch them…..

Ellies on the road and in the river.

Ellie herd moving along the roadside at Shingwedzi. You just have to sit and watch them as they are in charge.

In case you were wondering.......all the elephants are in the Kruger. There are no ellies in Mokala.

The next nugget will be about something that most people don't go into the parks to see.......

The sad thing is that they're not interested enough. It would be another boring viewing of someone else's holiday shots. :zzz Oh well, each to their own.....

Am always astonished that those tiny little legs have to travel so far so soon after birth. Just can't imagine how many km those tiny feet have already trod.....
