Thank you Philip1, Kaapsedraai and Trrp-trrrrrrr for your interest and comments

We have surprised ourselves as to how much and the variety we have seen on this trip, especially the birds. You only have to sit for a few moments to realise how much is going on around you.

Around Pretoriouskop

Pretoriouskop is one of those camps we have ignored in the past, so we thought we should put that right this time. Tucked away in the southwest corner of the park it has somehow managed to keep that atmosphere of what the early Kruger years might have been like. It is so quiet and restful.

Image

Image

While wandering among the sycamore figs we came across these green pigeons

Image

And this purple-crested turaco (hiding away so not a very good photo)

Image

We also saw brown-headed parrots and an African cuckoo but they were not hanging around for any cameras.

During our drives through the thickly wooded area we caught a glimpse of a large herd of buffalo which were using the dirt tracks cut through the bush but we couldn’t get any really good shots through the trees.

We sat watching a few ellies. This guy decided to show his strength by pulling down a branch and revealing his tonsils! Not a pretty sight!

Image

By contrast this dainty little klipspringer is a pretty sight !

Image

The real nugget was seeing mountain reedbuck for the first time.
Image

We glimpsed white rhino quite a few times keeping themselves well hidden in the bush. It’s amazing how easily they melt away, so apologies for the bum shot.

Image

On our way from Pretoriouskop to Satara evidence of repair work following the floods.

Image

So ended our time in the southern quarter of the Kruger. However, you never know what might be around the corner……

Definitely has old school charm!! Good to see the roads getting back to normal - lets hope this year the park gets spared the floods!!

We also stayed at Pretoriuskop last year September, and really enjoyed that peaceful camp. Barry chased the Brown-headed Parrots from tree to tree every late afternoon! :D You were lucky to see a Turaco and Green Pigeons too!

Beautiful Klipspringertjie, and WOW to the Reedbuck!

Cape of Storms, agreed. The Kruger could do without flooding again this season.

Hilda, Trrp-trrrrrrr, Pumbaa - it just shows that you don't have to go out of the camps to see something exciting.
There's always a huge amount going on in the camps, if only people looked!

I know. I thought they would be one of those creatures that only exist in the KNP pages
If I had to draw up a short list of nuggets, they would be right up there.

I find Pretotius Kop a gem of a place. The swimming pool area can offer such welcome respite from the heat. It is also so filled with history, being the place where Wolhuter made the early inroads into Kruger.

Lovely to see your images of the camp. 8)

You can sense the history of the camp. We're always drawn to a story about a certain dog that trekked through the area over 100 years ago and try to imagine what life was like then in that area. We also spotted Sable trail markings in the grass.
Often wonder if Wolhuter knew what would come out of his early explorations. :hmz:

Pleased to know that we weren't the only ones to be frustrated by the brown parrots.

Will certainly go back to Pretoriouskop.
