We recently visited Kruger with our children from the UK and their twin daughters (aged 9). We stayed in Pretoriuskop camp and although the sightings around camp were very slow, the children enjoyed the pool (and oupa Lake Panic)

Although the title refers to double trouble the girls were no trouble at all and we all really enjoyed the time together in one of our favorite places.

Image

We were glad to arrive at the camp after taking the scenic road from Pretoria via Malelane, stopping at Berg en Dal for a snack.

Image

Always a welcome sight

Everyone was ready and sharpening the eyesight for the big sightings.

The end of an exciting first day with everyone going to bed after a nice South African braai (not the usual UK barbecue on gas)

First daylight saw me waiting at the gate (unfortunately only third). When the gates opened I made my way towards Skukuza with final destination the Transport dam. Sightings were very quiet with only some elephant and then same buffalo far off.

Image

Image

Arriving at Transport dam I found a Hamerkop and Squacco Heron (I think please confirm) - afrikaans Gewone Ralreier foraging in the shallow water amongst the plants. At one stage the two picked up a bit of a "misunderstanding"

Image

Image

Image

Image

The Heron started really hunting but I never saw it actually catching anything

Image

A Yellow-billed Hornbill landed close to the car of other visitors begging to be fed, they ignored it but I could not let the moment for a photo to pass unused

It was with great anticipation that we all departed for Skukuza for a nice breakfast on the deck followed by a visit to Lake Panic. As it is a very popular spot in Kruger it is mostly very crowded. Luck was with me as when we arrived my favorite spot in the furthest corner of the hide was open. From here you can shoot both in a eastern and southern direction.

We were lucky as there was plenty of activity during the time spent there (I stayed the whole day but the rest of the family went back to enjoy the pool - no such luxury in the UK)

Firstly the African Darter managed to spear some breakfast

Image
Image

He played with it before eventually swallowing it (with some effort as it was a fairly big meal)

Image
Image

The swallows relaxed in the early morning sun

Image

While the Grey Heron did a fly by before landing on the nest
Image

Old sharpy and his friends were also swimming past

Image

and later decided to also enjoy the sun (al la Colgate style)

After the African Darter enjoyed his lovely breakfast the Pied Kingfishers arrived with their "snacks" (compared to the size of the Darter's catch :D )

Image

Image

Image

Image

After they have killed the fish and removed most of the scales by beating it against the branch, it would very quickly and efficiently be swallowed. They then clean the beak a few times against the branch, defecate and then dive into the water for a bath. I tried to anticipate where they would end up (in the water) to catch that magical moment. It is rather difficult and all I could get was one leaving the water (and many blurry shots or total misses :wall: )

Image

It was now around midday and all of a sudden we heard some elephant approaching through the bush. The first lot moved from west to east (or left to right for the ladies  ) and without any hesitation crossed the water right in front of us. They were very aware of the presence of the crocodiles and really rushed across.

Image

The hippo were not too impressed and made a quick run for the safety of the water (after a rude awakening), scattering ox-peckers in all directions

Image

A little later this small breeding herd arrived and had a drink right in front of us.

During the day we had some other interesting visitors at the hide. Firstly the little cute bushbuck

While the Grey Heron were ever present and doing their best to either provide shade for the chicks, feed themselves or just take a break from being responsible parents :naughty:

On the way back to camp I decided to follow the dirt roads. I have been looking for leopard on these koppies in Kruger for ages. Approaching another koppie I notice a Jetta parked and slowly approached. The kind lady waved me closer and then I saw it. Far of but at least visible. My leopard on the rock, not a good photo but all I have

Until next time
