It is that time of year again...the final countdown for our annual trip to KNP in October - 2 months to go!

Every year everyone makes a bet on which of the Big 5 they are going to see... then the Super Seven and finally the Small 5 ... so I took a trip down memory lane to start off with a few photos from 2012 to get us in the mood for the first of the Big 5 that I think we will see this year from our deck at Ngwenya Lodge overlooking the Crocodile Riveer...hope you enjoy dancing a tune with our Buffalo Soldier and his little companion... :)

Wakey, Wakey...

I think there will be some arguing about who will see what first...just like these two old bull shaving a tussle!

Moving onto ellies...we have so many great shots of elephants - but many are from the Okovango Delta, so that would be cheating. But here are some from Kruger:

This Big Boy was having a wonderful bath - we watched him rollimg around for 30mins and enjoyed the whole experience as much as he did!

Thanks again for reading and following this post...it is so lovely to share our excitement...by the way, did I mention it is 6wks and 3 days before we leave?!

The focus for this TR is the endangered rhino...just wish we could all do more to save them...Aslo a quick reminder about my daughter's friend who came to SA with us and was so moved by their predicament that she went home and raised over R3,000 to donate by door to door selling in her neighbourhood of the bracelets that she had made!

Well done Chloe! We want seethis crossing our path forever in the KNP!

Time for a rest...
Image

In the midst of an enromous roadblock ocreated by hundreds of buffaloe we pulled over to enjoy the vista - just to spot this chap coming to have a drink with the buffs...

Image
IMG_0560 by tracy@earwaker.com, on Flickr

How gorgeous....I cannot imagine KNP without these...
Image
IMG_0838 by tracy@earwaker.com, on Flickr

So solid yet so vulnerable...
Image
IMG_0558 by tracy@earwaker.com, on Flickr

...and..... the absolute highlight for us! We haven't seen a black rhino for 5 years!
Image
IMG_1184 by tracy@earwaker.com, on Flickr

...I always cheat a little, so please forgive me for ending the TR on this note...but I had to post these photos taken at the late Lawrence Anthony's (& Froncoise's) Thula Thula Reserve in Natal where we had the privilege of spending the evening chatting with Lawrence and hearing about all his adventures first hand - truly an amazing and unforgettable evening, particularly as he passed away unexpectedly shortly after. (Please read Babylon's Ark, the Elephant Whisperer and the The Last Rhinos written by him )...These two youngsters had been rescued as tiny babies from their poached mothers and slept on our baclony each night giving us quite a start in the morning until we got use to them! PLeased to say that under 24/7hrs guard they are now grown up and still thriving!

In less than 6 weeks time we will be sitting on our deck breathing in the wonderful earthy smell of Africa and enjoying the sounds of the bush chorus - we can barely wait!

Today I thought I'd share some photos of all the creatures that many of us seasoned bush addicts take for granted but which we are actually so excited to share with our friends who will be on their first 'safari' with us...antelope may be more common but are always worth stopping for too.

There may be millions of impala - but they are so elegant and beautiful...

or handsome....

These boys were so busy rutting that they barely noticed us!

One of the sounds we love is that of the zebra - which is where its other name, Quagga (and the name of the extinct sub species of the Burchells zebra) comes from...here are some of our favourite pics...

This rather shy fellow looks beautiful in black and white!

...an exhausted couple!
Image

The other photo that always captures the essence of Africa is the beautiful giraffe...

On our last bush walk our guide told us to watch giraffe carefully as they feed - they chew their cud and every few minutes their cheeks form 'bubbles' as you can see in this photo - we had never observedthis before, but now we always catch it!
Image

Apologies for the graphic content - but we thought we were rather lucky to capture this shot.

which would have resulted 457 days later in a similar looking chap...

look at these cuties!
