Well the next sighting was actually still in the camp, we stopped at the Cape Fox den close to cabin #4 and Mum and the kittens were already awake...

Image

Well almost awake.....

Image

Just after we had passed through the riverbed south of Urikaruus, a Giant Eagle Owl in one of the trees close to the road.

Image

Doing it's best to ignore us...

Image
Larger View

A little later a Tortoise

Image
Larger View

And a Bat-eared Fox

Image

Of course we checked the Owl tree at Montrose....

Image
Larger View

We even found yesterdays Lions again....

Image

It seems like this is Tortoise day.....

Image
Larger View

Another well hidden Pearl-Spotted Owl

Image
Larger View

And a Hare.... I love them 8)

Image

Now it was time for another cup of coffee and a snack, so we headed towards Auchterlonie.
Only to find out, that we had to have our coffee in the car and visiting the toilet did not seem to be a brilliant idea...

Image
Larger View

Had to photograph our breakfast visitor from the car....

Image

 ..... Breakfast with Lions at Auchterlonie...

Image
Larger View

So we left and drove a little further south....

Image
Larger View

A Pygmy Falcon...

Image
Larger View

We then checked the picnic spot again, before heading towards Kieliekrankie.
The Lions were still there and looked very much awake, so don't even think about going to the loo....

Image

Image

We had a very enjoyable lunch at KK with our friends. Baie dankie :k !!!
And left again early afternoon, very full with all kinds of the most delicous food, into the direction of Urikrauus.

On the way we found some very exhausted Lions

Image
Larger View

At Urikaruus we had some fun to observe the resident Wildlife...
This Squirrels was trying to cool down a bit, as it was a very hot afternoon...

Image
Larger View

A couple of Eland and a Giraffe came to the waterhole for a drink.

Image

The Giraffe scared one of the Elands away...

Image

Later afternoon light at Urikaruus.

Image

And later a well deserved G&T....

Image

To top it all, we had again visitors at the waterhole.

The Cape Foxes were still very sleepy...

Image

Image

We headed south, along the road we spotted some Squirrels with youngsters, so cute...

Image

Image

After we had passed Auchterlonie we spotted two Cheetahs in the riverbed,
Beautiful animals.

When they lied down we left them.

Two young Oryx close to Kamfersboom.

Image

Image

South of Houmoed we spotted a Cheetah Mum with one cub, unfortunately far into the riverbed, so only very bad photo opportunity.

Image

Image

We stopped at TR for some shopping and headed back to Urikaruus.
It was a hot and quiet drive back.

At Urikaruss a Kori came to the waterhole for a drink.

We observed the Squirrels once again...

Another visitor to the waterhole.

And shortly before sunset the Cape Fox Mum got active again. 8)

We woke up at 4 am..
Mr Jackal got hysteric at the waterhole and warned us that something was there...
We rushed outside and indeed, Barolong visited the waterhole together with the two cubs.

Later that Morning we had all kinds of visitors.

Oryx

Wildebeest

Rush- hour

Image

The animals were quite skittish...

Image

Later we drove north and yes, found again a Wildcat...

Image
Larger View

Thick-Knees

Image
Larger View

Image

That Mongoose caught a Mouse and gulped it down in seconds...

Image
Larger View

When we returned back to the camp later that day we saw one of Charlie's cubs again...

Image
Larger View

Then Charlie at dusk...

More visitors at the waterhole...
A Brownie

And later Lions

We were a bit sad, as this was our last evening before heading back to Twee Rivieren....
But our adventure at Urikaruus wasn't over yet

20.11.

As usual on a moving day we were up early.
I wanted to go on a last drive and we had to pack the car.
Well, at least I thought so.... :?

Today we were mowing to Twee Rivieren for the next couple of nights.

I just opened the door to the kitchen balcony when I discovered a Brownie at the waterhole. 8)

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image

Then she was gone..

Soon after she disappeared a Lion came to the waterhole.
He had blood on his paws and face....

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

The Cape Fox Mum observed them (there were two Lionesses as well...) too....

Image
Larger View

A couple of Eland wanted to come to the waterhole and very "irritated" that they saw Lion nearby.

Image
Larger View

By then we had discovered that they had killed an Eland right in the camp only a couple from metres away from our hut. :slap:

Image
Larger View

A kill so close, Lion feeding and I had not the slightest chance to get there, as the Lions were too close to make an attempt to get into the car to go there.... :wall:

Image
Larger View

Then I found a spot on the boardwalk, ideal to take some pics, but another car from the camp unfortunately now blocked the complete view
Well, he wasn't to blame, I think he had no idea that I was trying to get a glimpse of what was happening.....

Ok, so then I had to take some photos when we would pass by on our way out...
But, hey, the Lions were still very close, so how would be able to pack the car.... :hmz:

Francolin, tiptoed to the car, got into the passenger seat, slipping over to the drivers seat, drove the car between #2 and#3 and we carried all our stuff via the boardwalk to the car.
We nearly finished packing the car when the Wildebeest at the waterhole gave an alarm call and we had to rush up the stairs again, as the Lion wanted to have another drink...

After everything was done we had a last look over to the waterhole...

We said good bye to Jacques and left to have a closer look at the Lions....
It was hard to take a decent photo, the Lion was lying in the shade and the background was far too bright, so I tried to solve the problem using B&W...

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

The Ladies were pretty relaxed....

Image
Larger View

Yet another exciting start of the day.....

To be continued...

We had just crossed the riverbed south of Urikaruus when we found this Hyena lying right beside the road....

Later another Tree Rat

Beautiful Eagle

And north of Auchterlonie a very busy Meerkat....

The first Flowers

Image

Just south of Houmoed we spotted another Lion

Image

And on the dunes road leading to TR.
A beautiful Juvenile Pale Chanting Goshawk

Image
Larger View

We quickly checked in at Twee Rivieren.....
While we were unpacking the car we had an unusual sighting.
A plane flying over the camp...

Image
Larger View

In the afternoon we drove towards Rooiputs...
Along the road we saw dozens of Grey-backed Sparrowlarks
Here a male

Image
Larger View

And a femlae

Image
Larger View

Shortly before we reached Leeuwdril we came upon a big traffic jam and a mating pair of Lions.
She was nicely out in the open.

Image
Larger View

He was hiding behind a bush....

Image
Larger View

Later she went to lie down for a while....

Image
Larger View

We do not like traffic jams, so decided to move on...
I was wondering what happened to this Kori, he obviously enjoyed a mud bath

Image
Larger View

The first time that we saw a Bokmakierie in KTP, our first and only other sighting was at Augrabies a couple of years ago....

Image
Larger View

It was already getting darker and darker when we spotted the three Cheetahs again....

It has been yet another wonderful and adventure filled day in KTP and we were very happy, that we still had a couple of days left before we had to leave.... 8)

21.11.

Our plan for the morning was a short visit to Samevloeiing before heading towards the Aoub River Bed and Auchterlonie.

At Samevloeiing a couple of Jackals were fighting over an relatively freshly killed Eland

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

We had just reached Houmoed when we saw more Jackals on another dead Eland.

Image
Larger View

Shortly after that the two Cheetah brothers that we met before....
The second one is lying behind the tree and you just see one of his hind legs sticking up into the air...

Image
Larger View

When we were about to reach Kamfersboom waterhole we discovered a Leopard on top of the ridge...

Image
Larger View

He then got up and walked along the ridge.

Image
Larger View

We followed him for quite a while when he fortunately decided to come down the ridge and a little later crossed the road right in front of us.

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

We nearly reached Auchterlonie, when we found this....
Too full to move...

Image
Larger View

The second male...

Image
Larger View

And the female was lying near the waterhole...

Image
Larger View

Ready for another bite...

Image
Larger View

There is a lot of Eland in that belly...

Image
Larger View

Wow, what a power....
She tried to take the carcass with her, as more and more Jackals arrived on the scene...

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Now the Jackals took over...

Image
Larger View

Then we observed something we never saw before.
One of the Jackals ran away with the tongue of the Eland and started to dig a hole and bury his treasure... :hmz:

Image
Larger View

Now one of the males had enough and chased the Jackals away to safe his kill....

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Back at Samevloeiing the Vultures had arrived.

Image
Larger View

In the afternoon we wanted to drive to KijKij waterhole.
After we had passed Leeuwdril we met "our" Cheetahs again.

Image
Larger View

At KijKij, more dead Elands, more Jackals, more Vultures...

Image
Larger View

On the way back, the Cheetahs were still under the tree.

Image
Larger View

Just after passing Leeuwdril, we discovered a Cape Fox Den.

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

And another splendid Kalahari day ended with a visit of the restaurant together with some friends....... 8)

Well, the day already started very hot...
We decided to drive the Lower Dunes Road and head back to Twee Rivieren.

In the dunes we spotted one of those delicate Steenboks...

Image
Larger View

He turned around and was gone in seconds

Image
Larger View

I just love the landscape....

Image
Larger View

At KijKij, there were many Eland carcasses and even more Vultures...
Starting one by one from the top of a dune....

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Everyone had his share...

Image
Larger View

Near Melkvlei we spotted another Wildcat....

Image
Larger View

And again more Vultures and more Cracasses at Samevloeiing...

Image
Larger View

On our afternoon drive we spotted a Crow, flinging a caterpillar around until he lost all his hairs...

Image
Larger View

Ostrich in the way into the dunes...

Image

Then we spend quite a while with the gorgeous Cape Foxes near Leeuwdril...

Our first sight that morning were two Lionesses in the dunes on the way to the Aoub riverbed, ignoring us and totally focussed on what they might find in the dunes....

23.11. Part 3

We only drove maybe about a kilometre further south, when we discovered some movement near a tree, I stopped immediately.
A Leopard, a young one, obviously one of Barolongs cubs....

Image
Larger View

He then went up into the tree...

Image
Larger View

And went to lie down.....

Image
Larger View

Now we started to search the trees even more eager, as we wanted to find the second cub, we were sure, that he/she must be around somewhere...
And indeed not even 20 metres in a second tree the other cub....

The first cub was the male, called Tshidi and the second was the female called Seleka.
Thank you wanderw for the ID....

We were now on our way to KK with the biggest smile on our faces, that you can imagine...
Another lovely sighting was this Slender Mongoose, who sat still long enough for a nice pic..

Wow, what a morning... 8) 8)

23.11. Part 4

We arrived at KK and were greeted by Jacques, what a nice surprise, we hadn't expect to see him here, as we left him when he was still at Urikaruus.

We moved into #4 which is our favourite cabin at KK right at the "far" end of the camp.
We stepped into the kitchen and had the pleasant surprised, that the flaps had been replaced by windows, so now you can have something to eat in the kitchen and enjoy the view, even with a sandstorm outside....

We unpacked the car and start to relax again....
While we were lying on the beds a Kalahari Scrub Robin was sitting outside, singing....

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Later it was time to observe some of the about hundreds of mice around the cabin...

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Then I discovered something interesting....
Well, I knew that with binoculars you are able to see KK from Auchterlonie Picnic spot, so I thought this must be the case vice versa too.
I had a look and indeed, you are able to see Auchterlonie from the deck...

Image
Larger View

Now it was time for a last afternoon drive.....

We found a Tawny Eagle at the dead Eland calf.

Image
Larger View

The Hyenas at Kamfersbooom, not as active as in the morning...

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Spotted-eagle Owls on top of the ridge

Image
Larger View

Auchterlonie in beautiful light and without any other people around...

Image
Larger View

And arrived back at KK for a wonderful sunset....

Image
Larger View

Later while we were preparing the dinner, I saw a movement outside.
First I thought that it was a Wildcat, but on closer inspection, it turned out to be a Genet hunting for food...
What a special sighting again, we never ever saw a Genet in KTP before...

Image
Larger View

Well, this was our last full day in KTP, but fortunately we will still be able to drive till noon the next day, before finally heading home...
And you never know what happens during the last hours in the park.... :hmz:

24.11.

I already had a heavy heart that morning....
Our last couple of hours in the Park....
Yet still we were looking forward to what the Kalahari had in store for us as a farewell.

First time in the morning we saw a Brownie at the waterhole.

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

We said goodbye to Jacques and were soon on our way.....
Just after shortly after we had left the camp we spotted this Jackal, still not sure what he had found, but it looked like some kind of plastic to me.

Image
Larger View

While we observed this Gabar Goshawk (thanx anne-marie!) and some Lions, we had another wonderful sighting, a Yellow Ribbon, Sharifa and Duke, so we had a small chat before heading off again....

Image
Larger View

Image
Larger View

Before we reached Kamfersboom we spotted the Spotted-eagle Owls on the ridge again.

Image
Larger View

At Kamfersboom a Jackal inspected a Eland Carcass.

Image
Larger View

And two Lanners were observing the waterhole.

Image
Larger View

Shortly after that a Cape Fox crossed the road in front of us....

Image
Larger View

And went to sleep underneath a bush..

Image
Larger View

And at Monro another Lanner having breakfast.

Image

To be continued....
