Hyenas visited the waterhole at Urikaruus every day we stayed there.

Image

They are probably from the clan that have a den just on the other side of the riverbed as you go down the incline to get into it.

Image

Got one of the youngsters in a rather unflattering position.

Thanks! It is a bit different now. Temps are maybe getting into the positive numbers, and worst of all, rather shocking really: People expect me to work!

Just one little photo: https://dl.dropbox.com/sh/jzqzqsbrrgrxu ... /pano1.jpg
It is a pano, so as a link only.

That is your view if you stay in Urikaruus.
Arriving currently: The photos from our trip! Overhere! :yaya:

Kalahari Tented Camp is unfenced, right?

You park your car behind a high fence:

Image

Up to here it all makes perfect sense.

Then I sat down on the low wall outside the kitchen and DuQues called my attention to WHERE I was sitting and how close the wall is to the ground..... I made sure after that I stayed clear of the wall.

We had 2 HUH? moments in the park too.

The first was at Craig Lockhart....

Image

The second just outside Mata-Mata. DuQues called Piggy! I actually kept on driving because I thought he was nuts!! Then heard in his voice he was serious. Reversed and....

Image

According to the guys at Twee Rivieren they are seen around Mata-Mata mostly where they enter the Park from adjacent private farms.

Thanks everybody!

We were very lucky with many of the sightings. We drove many hours without seeing a single animal. Then you start looking for the smaller stuff. We only saw lions very late in the trip. I was getting worried I would have the first ever catless Kgalagadi trip. We were warned about the Auchterlonie lions. Even bought Handy Andy to smear on the tyres as deterrent. Which lions? Never saw them! There is a cheetah just outside Urikaruus. Our neighbour saw it every single evening we were there too. Which cheetah? Never saw it!

We just made the most of what we got. 8)

The Dalkeith lions in early morning light.

Mommy lion who kept a careful eye on her playful youngsters.

Some were well-behaved...

But you always get the black sheep in the family. In this case a young male....

And this one with her toy.

Image

Don't you even THINK of it....

Come on children, time to leave.

On the morning that we found the Dalkeith lions we had already decided to skip the lower loops around the waterholes since the roads were almost impassable by then. It was getting really ridiculous. We only kept to the higher road. Good choice...

Above 13de Boorgat...

Nothing there, right? :D

Image

We sat with them until they lay down and "disappeared". We desperately wanted to share them because if you didn't know they were there, you would simply drive right past! Nobody to share with.

Image

Image

Image

Little did I know at this stage how I would find cheetah less amusing and cute by the end of the trip.

We were "unlucky" as far as the HUGE Kgalagadi lions are concerned. This is the closest we got to one.

Image

This was fun. When you drive along the Nossob road you meander between South Africa and Botswana. If you see this, you're in Botswana.

Say WHAT?!
