Sharifa Special Surprise for Women’s (Birth)Day July'12

Unread postby Sharifa » Thu Jul 26, 2012 7:37 pm

The driver asked me what I am doing for the Women’s day long weekend and what I would like for my birthday, which is also in August.

I replied that I have nothing planned. So he showed me a booking he had made on line – another one of those last minute trips.

9/10 August in Olifants
11 August in Pretoriuskop.

What a wonderful surprise

Now just counting the days

9 August 2012.

We entered at Phabeni gate at around 9.30 am and it was great to escape the freezing Gauteng weather. Our first two nights were at Olifants and on the way to Skukuza we saw some general game.

At the low level bridge over the Sabie River we saw a Hammerkop eyeing the White-breasted Cormorants.

Hoping for a free lunch

Image

The minute he came close to them they disappeared under the water

Image

Image

only to surface again when the hammerkop left

and enjoyed their meal

We took the S36 as we always do when travelling north in the hope of finding Sables. We stopped at Jones-se-Dam like we always do.

There we found a woolly-necked Stork

Image

Ellies enjoying a mud bath

Image

Image

Image

Heard a splash and saw a Grey Heron catch his fish and take off with it

Image

Image

Then as the ellies moved away and we heard the low rumble of the ellies. Something had spooked them

Image

It was only then we saw the two lionesses under a tree in the distance

Further on the S36 a buff herd crossed the road

Image

Image

On the H7 we found a pearl spotted owlet

Image

On the H1-4 between Satara and Olifants some zebra

Image

and a lilac breasted roller

Image

Image

It was great to be in Kruger. We got to Olifants, unpacked and had the braai going in no time.

10 August 2012 - There is a leopard walking on the road

We were first out of camp the next morning and headed South. Saw a hyena on S92 but it did not hang around. Also saw some kudu and buffs.

At Ngotso North we saw two cars driving slowly :hmz: thought we were first out. We realized they must have come from Balule. There was a lion walking on the road

Image

He stopped and called out

Image

and then joined the lioness

Image

We moved on and stopped for an ellie crossing the road. A SANPark employee came from the South and told us there is a leopard walking on the road about 2 km away, and there is another car there so we will not miss it

:hmz: Could not imagine the spotted one hanging around for us......

Image

She was on the move with the cars trailing slowly

Image

but there was enough of a gap for us to get good views and the lady did stop and pose for us

Image

She was obviously patrolling her area

Walking

Image

stopping to have a look

Image

going into the grass and sniffing

Image

Image

back on the road

Image

stopping and looking

She moved to the other side of the road, looked around trying to make up her mind

Image

Crossed the road again

Image

Image

This time she got off the road and jumped onto a fallen tree

Image

Image

Image

before she disappeared into the undergrowth

We had a lovely 20 minutes with her :D

Back at Olifants while the Driver relaxed after the long drive I made him take, I went around the camp and found a friendly Pearl-spotted Owlet

Image

Image

flowering impala lillies and aloes

Image

On the afternoon drive we took the S44 and got the

Brown-hooded Kingfisher

11 August 2012

We went south on the H1-4 and all was very quiet compared to the day before. We took the S100 again hoping to find the Super Pride and all we found were these two lazy males

Image

Image

Image

Also on the S100 a juvenile Martial Eagle making a meal of a monitor lizard

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The rest of the journey to Pretoruiskop was just general game but we did get this Purple Roller

Image

12 August 2012 - Just another big five day

Today we leave the park but not before we got some Kruger Magic 8)

We were first out of Pretoruiskop and took the Voortrekker road and got this gorgeous sunrise

Image

Saw some general game but it was a quiet morning. Guess some days are like that. We crossed the H3 and

continued on the H2-2. There we got a few ellies and a Dagga Boy on the S114.

Just before the S118 turnoff we found this beautiful Lady sunning herself on the rocks. She was about 50 metres from the road in dappled light and framed by the foliage.

We continued on our way and onto the S119. In the riverbed we saw this lioness walking and calling out.
We wondered what would turn up, a majestic male or some little cubs maybe :hmz:

Image

Then we saw the whole pride emerge out of the bushes on the opposite side of the river

Image

Image

Image

and they kept coming down into the riverbed. There were thirteen in all

Image

Image

Image

Image

:hmz: wonder if we will see white lions in the area in the future judging by this lady

Slowly they came out of the riverbed in front of us, one by one. They then walked on the road.

We counted 13 of them - lionesses and cubs altogether. We followed them and then they disappeared into the bush.

Thank you Crested Val :)

We left the lions. The sensible thing would have been to exit the Park at Malelane Gate and go home, but oh dear, we were naughty again - ala Crested Val :D

So we drove around a while longer and saw a white rhino on the road that was hassling a mum and her calf.

We watched this stand-off for 20 minutes

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

and when this guy tried to pass he had to reverse in a hurry

Image

Image

This was our last good sighting for this wonderful weekend. Thank you for joining us

Next drive in the KTP in November
