Blackie The KTP trip that almost did not take place! May '12

Unread postby Blackie » Mon May 14, 2012 1:16 pm

Addicted to KTP, we planned to leave the Friday of Easter Weekend to start our fourth KTP trip at Twee Rivieren from Monday the 9th April. Disaster struck and it all started off on a bad note - the Thursday afternoon the starter motor of my vehicle decided it had enough and not even an auto electrician could assist as the agents were already closed for Easter so replacement parts were out of the question.

After a bit of deliberation and convincing SO that all will be well, we decided that this small misfortune will not interfere with our planned trip and left the next morning at 5 am as planned. For most part of the trip however, it was down to this:

After spending the long weekend along the Orange River we arrived at TR as planned and set up camp:

During our first drive we found the usuals:

The next photo was just a coincidence and defnitely not photoshopped:

The next day we did the Leeudril 4x4 (with a bakkie without a starter!) and came across this family at the Kij Kij waterhole:

Please help in turning the page for me.

Hope I am not transgressing forum rules regarding number of photos per page, but here is a few more of the cheetahs:

Part 2:

Thanks again forumites for the kind comments.

Then it was off to Nossob where we spent the next 4 nights. I had the privilege of meeting FotomalJohan from the forum and we had a nice chat. On day 1 we had this sighting just a few kilometres north of the gate. It was actually off the normal road on the 4x4 track leading into Botswana:

We also had some beautiful sunsets at Nossob and a visitor in the tree above our camping site one night:

This one was not so fortunate and got killed – it happened North of Nossob but was not caused by us. When we went north it was not there and then not more then 10 minutes later on our return we found it lying next to the road:

Part 3

We then headed for Mata Mata for the last part of our stay in KTP – 6 nights. It turned out to be the right choice to stay the longest at Mata Mata as we definitely had the most sightings on this side.

One morning, just south of Craig Lockhart we saw 3 lions walking south down the riverbed. At the same time there were 6 more lions walking up the riverbed towards Mata Mata. We went to the waterhole and waited there until the 6 eventually arrived and we had a prime sighting!

I will post more photos of these Lions after my trip report is done.

Later that day we also saw a cheetah sitting in the long grass on the dunes side of the road. After a few minutes two gemsbok came walking directly towards her but then stopped about 50 metres away and appeared quite nervous.

They however started walking directly towards her again and the next moment she jumped up and gave chase together with another cheetah that was lying flat in the grass which we did not even notice. Due to the long grass the chase was not even on and they soon gave it up and then came walking down crossing the road right in front of us:

More photos of them after my trip report.

We had a nice camping spot at Mata Mata, under the big tree on the right as you enter the campsites, close to the hide and the fence although nothing of note seen at the waterhole during our stay.

There were a few good laughs as well:

And then the last night at Mata Mata came and we were very reluctant to waive KTP goodbye. It all ended with a promising thunderstorm but in the end it was more thunder and lightning rather than rain:

And then finally, the exit:

All in all, we had a great time, had excellent sightings and will definitely be back for more in the near future.

As promised, I will post some more photos later on.

[quote="lion queen"]Love the sunset photo and the giraffes are one of my favorite animals!!!quote]

We had a good laugh at that giraffe. It was too comic the way he position his front legs when drinking water - it almost looked like he was going to slip and land on his neck. And then again, when finished he slapped the two front feet together as if someone shouted: Aandag!.

That lion pic I posted earlier on, taken north of Nossob, almost remind me of this one which we saw south of Mata Mata last year:

Thanks MM, Billyf, RichardJ, chirinda, picnic, and Tobieo for the comments.

Picnic, yes, it was on the Mata Mata side in the riverbed on the 14th borehole loop that we saw him. There was another one with him which had a bent horn - his rightside (looking from the front) horn was bent midway on a 90 degrees bend!

I will post some more pics soon.
