So on to Satara. We decided to travel along the S36 instead of the tar road and did not see a lot on the way, but the sightings from earlier this morning were more than enough to keep us happy for the rest of the day.

Here are a few handsome fellas from along the way.

Also at a dam along the road we saw a crocodile that seemed to be missing a large portion of its tail. We wondered about this, would it maybe have been another croc :|
Not sure what predators they have if any.
The funny thing about the other boring looking croc photo is that when checking it back home I am convinced that there is a slinky cat in the background on the dirt mound top left corner. You probably won’t see it here but when I crop in the shape is visible and I swear I can see the ears!! SO says I am seeing things ...oh well I guess it will remain a mystery

Stopped for a cuppa at Muzandzeni where we were joined by the hornbills. I know they are pretty common over there but we really like them, not having hornbills here in Oz.

We could not resist a quick drive down the S100 before we checked in at camp, but alas the road was empty :( .

However we did spy our first ever Ground Hornbills which was pretty exciting for us, they were on our 'list'
of hopefuls :D :D

Hi Everyone

Thanks so much for your lovely comments Pumbaa, Hilda, Hoyle, Chirinda, Rookie and Melph.

Hoyle, 5 weeks in the park would be wonderful.  Chirinda, we still talk about those doggy sightings and appreciate how special it was to see two packs like that, especially as we did not see any more. Same with hyaenas, we think we may have seen them nearly every day over the two week period in all areas, but of course the ones playing on the road were fantastic. Have some more special ones coming up   .

Melph, well camoflaged is an understatement, but I can believe right? As for all the babies I think I am going to have to do a special 'baby book' when I am doing our photos, we are seeing so many.

Hilda yes we have never really seen a wildebeest so nearby before and we enjoyed getting a close up despite the grumpy look, he does not look happy does he :)

Back soon with more

We were up bright and early as usual for our first day at Satara. At the gate at daybreak we would drink our Amaroula coffee while chatting with everyone else patiently waiting in the queue. This became a ritual we really enjoyed, wondering what would be in store for us today.

At a time of the day when we are normally barely able to speak coherently [pre coffee], let alone have a decent conversation, it was quite amazing to us that we were laughing and chatting about all sorts of things, mainly sightings and so on, before the sun was even up.

I guess that is just one of the effects that Kruger has on us, it turns usually night people into ‘morning people’

It seemed it was mostly the ‘regular locals’ that we talked to, they were always so friendly and interested in us and where we were from, and eager to share their knowledge.
Something else that fascinated us was that so many people live just outside the park and can just ‘duck home’ for supplies. Wow we cannot imagine being so lucky living 30 hours away, and it is good to see that so many people appreciate what they have in their own country.

So once again we set off for a drive along the good old S100, maybe today would be our kitty kat day.

It was not to be and in fact was fairly quiet, some very cute young zebra and buffalo and that is all apart from the ground hornbills that we had seen the evening before.

So not feeling too lucky today we decided to hang around camp and go a bit easier on ourselves, after all we had been on the go for twelve hours a day for the past week.

Well in the end we actually had a really lovely time just lounging around in the camp, first off we had a leisurely breakfast on our bungalow verandah while watching giraffe, impala and wildebeest coming across in front of our bungalow and heading to the waterhole.

Of all the giraffes we have seen we still have not seen any 'bending' to have a drink, well now we finally get to see this right outside our camp. :)

What could be better. :D :D

Best ever breakfast view

After the giraffes left the waterhole we spent we spent quite a bit of time just strolling around the grounds and enjoyed watching the birds that were in the trees right outside the Satara restaurant.

There did not seem to be many other people interested in the camp birdlife but we loved it, I guess seeing most of these is an everyday occurrence for many.

So we have been here in Kruger Park a week now :D :D and are just loving it. Have seen some amazing wildlife and still have a couple of weeks left. Loving the camps, people, everything, already worrying about the return to normailty in a couple of weeks. :( :D :( :D

Of course there is just that one niggle in the back of our minds....we would love to see some big haired kitty kats
soon

So after a week in the park is it time yet....what will we see tomorrow :hmz: :hmz:
Maybe we won't follow the packs in the morning......maybe maybe maybe.......

Today we jumped out of bed with a feeling of anticipation and were first in the gate queue, sipping our Amaroula coffee...how I miss that

We had a feeling it was going to be a good day and oh boy what can I say

Off we went with all the other vehicles and we watched as they turned down the H7 and S100, but no, for some reason we just kept going with no particular route in mind. Most unusual for us. Got to the H6 and thought this will do, after all there were no other cars around so lets give a new road a try.

As we drove we saw a couple of big birds near the road that we had never seen before, so a quick look at our trusty Honeyguide book told us they were Kori Bustard. Yay, nice for us to see another new bird.

IMG_5524 by thesandmans2012, on Flickr

Nothing else visible around, got to the end of the road and turned onto the S41, an area we have never been in before.......
