I see no-one is clamouring for me to continue...so I will do so anyway

DAY 4: Mata Mata Part 3

So we went down to 13th Borehole...thinking this day can certainly only get worse from here...the best was surely over.

In my mind the only thing better than a caracal, is ANOTHER caracal!

As we turned into the 13th Borehole loop (all by ourselves, might I add?) we saw this girl come right out of the bushes and she starts walking RIGHT NEXT TO US

Stop for a scratch of the pointy ears...

...and move on again...

She looked a bit thin and had a nasty gash on her back, but seemed healthy enough... :|

By now 3 or 4 vehicles had joined in behind us, and we vehemently (through the use of hand gestures out the opposite window and angry faces) kept them behind us so no-one can spoil this sighting and scare her off (she was very timid  )

We could see she was on her way for a drink...and we were determined to let her have her drink... :sniper: :rtm:

...more images to follow... :cam:

Thanks for the very kind words, folks!!

Glad you are enjoying this. I milked the sighting for photos, and will share quite a few more here, trusting you won't get bored with them

DAY 4: Mata Mata Part 4

So we drove very slowly next to the Caracal...keeping the other tourists behind us, as we were afraid that a sudden increase in movement would spook her...
:D

Get out from behind those darn grasses!!!

Image

That's better!!

Time for a yawn...on-the-move!

...and for cleaning the paws of unwanted thorns...

...before finally crossing the road...

...she was going to have a drink, folks!! :cam: :cam: :cam:

I am so glad you are enjoying these!!

You wouldn't believe it, Pumbaa, they were behind us and as we were trying to coax the traffic behind us to allow the cat some space, they came up next to us, and told us that they were moving on and would drive slowly. We let them pass - and the next thing they stop at the waterhole RIGHT at the SPOT I had picked out for the best photos of the drinking scene... :wall:
Liars! :sniper:

Anyhow...let's let bygones be bygones...

Some more!!

DAY 4: Mata Mata Part 5

Approaching the water...

Image

Circling around, weary of getting her feet wet... :hmz:

Image

EASY DOES IT!!

Image

And UP!

Image

...a drink and a shake of the head...

Image

One last look! :cam:

Image

...and then she got down and disappeared into the dunes...

:( :? :k

Bye bye Caracal - I hope the gash on your back gets better and you eat enough to bulk up a bit during the coming summer.

We said a quick hello to Gus and Margie Mills who had come from the South and joined the sighting as she was slaking her thirst.

And then we moved on...

Thanks Suej and FMJ!

Welcome aboard FMJ - I hope you get your pics back!!!

DAY 4: Mata Mata Part 6

We carried on up to the Urikaruus turnoff...and lo and behold...a pride of lions was relaxing under a tree at the turnoff T-junction.

Image

Image

there were a few cars parked at this sighting, so we waited a while for some position-shifting to occur between tourist vehicles...

Image

Image

Image

It was getting really hot and we needed to get back. The swimming pool (and some brunch) was waiting... :hmz:

This Southern PCG had chosen the wrong perch - a 3thorn cannot support his lanky body! Look how he tries to balance himself...

Image

Eventually the bird gave up and flew off.

We made it back to camp without any further noteworthy stoppages...

Thanks so much guys.

Alvin - you are going to enjoy your trip so much!

DAY 4: Mata Mata Part 7

So we had a rest and a swim and a lunch back at the camp, and set out again in the afternoon for a drive.
We would've stayed 3 nights at Mata Mata, heading home from there, but decided to have a look at whether we can get a chalet in Twee Rivieren for the following night - both making the long drive home a tad shorter and also for a little bit of comfort after camping out in the desert for a week. We got lucky! So we knew this would be our last afternoon drive from Mata Mata.

This Snake Eagle was looking out for some grub.

Image

Some scenes from the road (loved the clouds here)...

Image

Image

Image

Between Dalkeith and 14th Borehole we drove past a tree, and I yelled: STOOOOP!!! :naughty: :rtm:
I saw something...
Back up...
There it is...

Image

Hello Kitty!

Image

This African Wild Cat was very tired and not obliging us any better views...so after about 15 minutes we pushed on...

Old lazy bones with the sore leg was still out for the count at 14th...

Image

We waited for him to get up. He didn't...

A fork-tailed drongo back-lit by the setting sun.

Image

We had to head back to camp. The cat was still there.

Image

Suddenly another tourist drives by and doesn't even see the cat. We flash our lights and get them to stop. Being the friendly people that we are, and wanting everyone to share in the joys of this sighting, we tell them about the cat. Very grateful, they turn around and go to the tree. But - oh no - when they realise they can't get a nice photo of his face, they summarily drive their pickup off the road and around the tree, stopping right under the tree and chasing the cat even further up the branches!! :wall: :sniper: :sniper:

Image

Made me think twice of ever sharing good sightings with passers-by :rtm: :slap:

Needless to say I showed the pictures to reception and reported this CHOP upon our return to camp. They actually noted that they "know this gentleman" (implying he's caused trouble before :naughty:)

At Sitzas this jackal quenched a last-minute thirst.

Image

Image

It turned out to be a beautiful sunset on the way to camp...

Image

Image

With the moon already risen...

Image

We had a peaceful last night in Mata Mata...knowing we had to get up a bit earlier to break up our camp and be on the road for good light/sightings... :rtm:

Your kind comments are making me blush, folks

To see AWC in a tree and Caracal like that is awesome. Amazeballs!

Could you please share your 'weapon' of chioce? Nikon/Canon and lens?

Thanks Riaan.

On this trip I was still a Canon shooter. Most of the images you see on this TR were taken with the Canon 7D and Canon 100-400mm L IS USM zoom lens attached. The wide-angle stuff was taken with the backup Canon 1000D and Canon 10-22mm USM ultrawide zoom.

These days I am a Nikon shooter :sniper:

Thanks a million times over for the very kind compliments, guys. So glad you are enjoying this!! It's been great to re-live the trip through this TR, given that this was back in October 2010. :D

DAY 5: Mata Mata to Twee Rivieren Part 1

We got up early enough to pack up our camp and get it all in the SUV, and made it out of the gate about 15 minutes after opening time...which is late for my standards  :wall:

First up - Ostrich on a ridge...

Image

It was an overcast, gloomy day...with the promise of rain sometime later in the day... which would be great as the park was REALLY dry at this time.

The rest of the road was VERY quiet... :hmz:
Until we reached the Kamqua waterhole...

Image

3 young lion brothers!! They had just drank water and were moving north up the Auob.

Loving the interaction here!

Image

Image

Image

We all fall down!

Image

Image

After a few more minutes of lounging around, they walked on and disappeared over the dunes...

Image

...so we pushed on southbound...

Thanks folks. I had an amazing time in Mana Pools...WOW

I tried to post some more images before I went but the system was having issues with "determining photo resolution" even though I sized them the same that I always do :hmz:

Anyway, let's try again...

DAY 5: Mata Mata to Twee Rivieren Part 2

We pushed on and found some Giraffes close to Batulama - the furthest south we'd ever found them

Image

And a little further on?? MORE lions!
2 young males were lying right by the roadside.

Image

Image

Image

Image

We carried on south...and had to stop for a Kalahari tractor who crossed the road...

Image

As we reached Samevloeiing, the skies were looking ominous...

Image

We booked into our chalet, and had a little rest...

But it was not long before I went out trying to get to know the local ground squirrels more intimately with my camera... :naughty:  :cam:

Thanks again for the kind comments everyone!

:k

DAY 5: Twee Rivieren Part 3

While my friend was still having a rest in the air-conditioned room at Twee Rivieren, I took out my towel and went to lie down on the mini sand dune in front of our unit (it was close to the admin offices at the back), to photograph the antics of the resident Ground Squirrels. Here are some of my results...  :cam:

Introducing the characters!

Thanks folks! Glad you enjoyed these little ones...

Let's get this over and done with, shall we? I've got 4 more trip reports to catch up on!!!

DAY 5: Twee Rivieren Part 4

One last squirrel picture...my favourite - I used panning to capture this, this is how it came out of the camera so the blur wasn't added in Photoshop... :naughty:

Image

We headed off for a quick last drive - our very last of the trip. The following morning would be an early start on the long road home for us in order to make it back in time for dinner with our wives... :gflower: :k

As we drove out - the weather was starting to really look ominous. Even this springbok looked for shelter!

Image

Here are some images of the building storm. We went to Leeuwdril and sat there for a while - all the animals were hiding... :hmz:

Image

Image

The view of the storm from Leeuwdril...

Image

Image

Image

We sat in the car and watched nature unleash her fury...it was an amazing way to endure my first Kgalagadi storm!

As it subsided (it didn't last too long) we headed back to camp in the last light of day. Post-storm/rain sunset light is always the most amazing - so clear, crisp, golden and inviting...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I wished I could've gotten out with a tripod and properly photographed this landscape... :wall:
(this was all from the car)

As we got close to Twee Rivieren, we saw the most amazing cloud formation with some candyfloss light hitting it...

Image

To reception to hand in our permit for the last time...

Image

And the view behind our chalet...

Image

One last braai, packing all the stuff and we were all set to head home the next morning...I knew I wouldn't return quickly as my wife was 7 months pregnant at that stage...but the next time I would return it would be with our daughter! :D

Thanks so much everyone for trundling along at my slow TR pace - I've got too many other things on my plate so I try to make time for these and finish them up quickly...

Keep an eye out for the following TR's I need to catch up on (remember this was still October 2010):

1. Golden Gate & Mountain Zebra - April 2011
2. Northern Kruger - August 2011
3. Kgalagadi!! - November 2011
4. Kgalagadi!! - February 2012
 :hmz:
