My camera was clicking away non-stop :cam:
In fact when I got back home and downloaded the camera I had taken over 600 photos this day!!

Image

From my SA bird app I think this may have been a juvenile pale chanting goshawk? :hmz:

Around the next bend the scenery changed from sparse rocky habitat to pockets of lush green thickets.
Perfect for some kudu to hide in

About 2 hours into the loop we came to the Doornhoek Picnic ground.
Just knowing that there COULD be lions around was exciting!!
And could we be lucky enough to see a black rhino while we were there?

Image

We had a yummy lunch, listening to the birds around us. But neither of us wanted to dally – we had more of the Karoo to see

Dad and I saw a lot of ostrich on the drive and finally I managed to get a little video of one running.
Dad and I couldn’t help giggle at his technique :D

Then Daddy slammed on the brakes and it was my turn to go "What? Where?!"

They were a long way off, and the air around them was shimmering with the heat, but through the binoculars we confirmed the sighting of our very first Cape Mountain Zebras!!!

I had to put my camera on digital zoom to get these photos :cam:

Boy were we thrilled

While we were enjoying the view we noticed little birds flitting about :hmz:
Finally one of them landed so I could get a photo.

Again, it was very far away so I had to use the digital zoom but oh WOW, a rock kestrel!
Another tick for us

As we drove away from the lookout I remarked to Dad that it would be nice to see the animal the pass was named after.

Then just around the next bend we saw one!!
Our only Karoo klipspringer, who was very photo-shy.
But at least I got a bumshot

And this was the view going down the other side of the Klipspringer Pass 8)

Up ahead we saw some brown blobs on the stone wall on the side of the road :hmz:

It wasn’t until we got closer that we could see it was two baboons lounging around in the midday sun :D

Image

Unfortunately, they weren’t too happy about being disturbed so they took off, allowing us a photo of what I think must be one of the most.... er.....intricate bumshots of the animal kingdom
