Tony T Our Sept 2011 Kgalagadi trip

Unread postby Tony T » Thu Dec 01, 2011 8:20 pm

A rather belated Kgalagadi coming up. Our September trip.

Our trip started on 20 September and this time we were going straight to Mata Mata after sleeping over at Askham night before.

We arrived at Mata Mata after a fairly uneventful trip. The weather was playing along, a very pleasant 30. After setting up camp and getting the fire started, I scouted around for some photo opportunity.

Image

This Yellow Mongoose was scurrying around preparing for the night and could not help copying a Meerkat.
The day of the 21st we set out early. The night had been cool and a fairly mild day seemed on the cards.
At gate opening time we hit the road.

Image

Vulture nest very close to the road. The early morning light the right time for a good shot.

Image

So too this ‘family’ of Giraffe. Notice the little one snuggling up to mom.

Image

At Dalkeith we stopped for a ‘car brekkie’ and watched this Martial eagle minding his own business.

Image

Later on our way back to camp we came across a Bateleur that had just caught a rodent. We were fortunate, he did a fly past for us.

Image

Later, we went for a late afternoon drive and between Sitzas and Craig Lockhart we spotted this Bateared Fox.

No cats today but we were just happy to be in our favourite park.

Sept 22nd – Weather still very pleasant, for which we were grateful. We headed out early and at Dalkeith we were treated to our first cat sighting.

The following are photo’s of birds we saw that day.

Image

A Gabar Goshawk.

Image

A Purple Roller.

Image

“Our” Martial at Dalkeith.

Image

A Black Shouldered Kite. They were plentiful on this trip and lots of youngsters too.

Image

The first highlight of our day were Kudu at Dalkeith waterhole and this time up close. Common in other parks but, for us, only seen at a distance in KTP. My favourite buck.

Image

Gemsbok at Dalkeith.

Image

On our way back to Mata Mata we saw this springbok mom with a lamb that must have been born that day.

Image

Not far from camp, the second highlight of our day, an African Wildcat.

What a special day we had had in this wonderful park.
