Saturday morning (conclusion of the morning drive)

On my way back to Mosu lodge, once again, some general game like these below:

The gemsbok in Mokala also have some deformed horns:

The park's nick name could be Kudu park - I've never seen so many kudus in one day. It is like impalas in the KNP.

Saturday afternoon:

After a nice rest and sorting out some of the photos, I decided to take an afternoon drive along the Doornlaagte and Kameeldoring loop and visit Stofdam & bird hide again.

First I came across this red hartebeest and her triplets. Manage to take a photo of one of the triplets while they were lying in the shade of a big camel tree:

Afternoon drive:

A few hunderd meters further down the road this warthog was drinking water and took a mudd bath (unfortunately where I couldn't take a photo).

Saturday afternoon:

In the Doornlaagte loop I came across this Gabar goshawk - very shy, flew a few times but luckily (everytime) sat near the road. So I decided to approach it very slowly, only then did he/she give me a few shots until another car came from in front and passed me. And off she goes.

Saturday afternoon:

Specially for Hilda and my wife - the warthog is also her favourite animal. I muts always stop when a we saw one:

This was was when she came out of the bath - just look at that look she gave me, invading her privacy!

Saturday afternoon - concluded:

After the goshawk, only some general game. Then I came across this Short-toed rock thrush sitting at the top of a tree in the last light of the day:

And then just 2km from the lodge at the t-junction, there were a herd of about 8 reebucks against the hill. This one gave me a nice late afternoon shot. I followed them but the grass were too long and they never came into the fading light again.

Me and my pets:

And that was the Saturday afternoon drive along the two loops.

Sunday morning to follow.

Sunday morning:

I decided to take the morning drive a little bit later - first check out and then a quick drive (turn out not to be a quick drive) before exit the park once again via Lilydale gate.

I decided to try the Matopi loop again and go and have look at the waterhole again. On my way, the giraffes - also a bit deformed:

Sunday morning:

Arrived at the waterhole and stayed for about 15min - nothing going on. Such is life in the park. One day - 2h worth of activities, the next day - no activities. So I decided to move on and give Stofdam a try. About 2km past the Haak en Steek entrance I suddenly saw a bee-eater with its breakfast. I quick stop and reverse. Forward again because it flew again.

Got the shot - I was so proud of myself as the bee-eater was (as always) very quick.

Sunday morning:

Then, as I was pulling away, there was another bee-eater with another snack. Then I realise I must be near a nest because this one didn't eat the snack. In fact, it disappeared with the snack into a erdvark hole.

Image

So decided to wait and watch - to study the behaviour of the two birds because it is usually very predictable around the nest with small/young ones.

And so it was - they had three or four favourite branches and were "hunting" from those branches - returned to it as well

Sunday morning:

So decided to park next to one of the branches and wait. I could not get a shot at them going into there nest - too long grass around it although it was next to the raod. At the end I stayed there for about 1h watching and shooting - trying different setting on my camera:

What an opportunity to practice - I've got lots more of these kind of photos. Like I said, drive slowly and be on the look out for the smaller things. Three cars passed me - only interested in the bigger game. With my previous drive I did not see them. Just show you.

Sunday morning - trip conclusion:

So I had to drive a little bit faster back to Stofdam - nothing going on at the bird hide. So I decided to go directly to the gate as I had to pick up my wfie at Bloemfontein airport at 15H00. On the way I say the last of the big game on the list - just to conclude yet another very succesfull trip to Mokala:

Hope you've all enjoyed the trip with me and enjoy your own trip wherever it migth take you.
