Dec. 12, 2011 Karoo National Park (1)

We left this rainy and windy coast early in the morning. We were longing for the sun. Only a few hours drive and we were there – in the Karoo National Park.

Our first sighting – an ostrich

As we were a bit early for the check-in, we first stopped at the bird hide.

The Karoo National Park is a real gem! There we found the most friendliest staff, the best maintained chalet, the best restaurant we ever had in a South African National Park!

After unloading the car I took the chance to go for a swim; a pleasure I had not very often this holiday. The swimming pool in the Karoo N.P. is wonderful, the water was quite chilly.

In the Karoo N.P. there are not many roads to drive (if you don’t have a 4WD). Here a few impressions of the beautiful scenery.

Typical for the Karoo N.P. are ostriches, ostriches, ostriches!

Red Locust

The red locust is an insect I had never seen before. I had to google to identify it. But what I found is quite interesting: “The second most dangerous locust species for South Africa is the red locust or red wing locust. They occur in marshy areas in the vicinity of Lake Rukwa and a number of other lakes in Central Africa. From 1893 to 1909 enormous swarms of this locust appeared in South Africa. They caused extensive damage along the east coast in particular, but the flying swarms also travelled around the Free State and the Karoo regions. Large swarms of this species occurred in the twentieth century from the southeastern Cape to the Congo and Sudan and it was probably this locust that destroyed Jan van Riebeeck's first harvest.”

Back in the camp we prepared dinner. Today it was job sharing: I was responsible for the ostrich goulash (believe me, there was no road kill in the park) and SO for the mashed sweet potatoes. After dinner we were sitting outside till midnight enjoying the beautiful starry night. Such a Karoo night is pure magic!

Breakfast is included in the accommodation rate of the Karoo N. P., so we tried it and were really impressed. There are a few options you can choose from – and it’s all very tasty!

Image

For today we had planned to drive to Klipspringerpas and Doornhoek. Scenic roads, but very bumpy. We spotted zebras, red hartebeests, kudus, gemsbok, springboks, many ostriches and again red locusts. According to the sighting board the Karoo lions seem to prefer the 4WD-roads.

Unfortunately it became cloudy and hazy on this route.

Back in the camp we stretched our legs and explored the Fossil Trail. Even there were the gorgeous red locusts.

After our lunch break we started for another drive.

Don’t disturb. The kudu lady is hungry!

Today we took dinner in the restaurant. The lamb was absolutely delicious!

Dec. 14 - 15, 2011

When I woke up early in the morning on Dec. 14, I saw the blue sky, heard the wind and knew – again a day for long trousers!

After breakfast SO made his video recordings in the camp, then we left the fascinating Karoo N.P.

Through the sparse landscape we drove to Prince Albert, an oasis in the Karoo. We found a comfortable room in a lodge for one night.

:o Soon after arrival we noticed that the registration plate of our car was missing. We had lost it somewhere on the road. This was not surprising at all, because it had not been screwed-on! It had only been fastened with adhesive strips!

On Dec. 15 we carried on via Meiringspoort (breathtaking scenery!) to Mossel Bay.

In Mossel Bay where we stayed for one night we visited the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex. The Maritime Museum within the complex houses a life-sized replica of the ship in which Bartolomeu Dias sailed round the Cape and landed in Mossel Bay in 1488.

The next destination was Bredasdorp where we stayed three nights. Bredasdorp is a good base for day trips, e. g. Robertson Wine Route, De Hoop Nature Reserve (a fascinating reserve, not SANParks, but you can use your Wild Card there), Arniston and Cape Agulhas.

Bredasdorp is surrounded by farmland. And there we spotted the National Bird of South Africa, the blue crane, and summer visitors from Europe, white storks.

There is not much to tell about the well-known southernmost tip of Africa. Most possibly, you had already been there.

The last week of our holiday we spent in lovely Simon’s Town. We stayed in a beautiful apartment. The garden was a paradise for birds (and birders).

If you are staying in Simon’s Town you are very close to the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). Boulders is only a stone’s throw away.

Boulders (TMNP)

We visited Boulders a few times during our stay. So I got a pretty good insight in the private life of the African Penguins.

Hi, here I am. What to do now?

Image
Yes, let’s dance !

Image
Maybe a little bit closer?
Image

Image
There must be a place for us …

Image

Image

We should better leave them alone now. They are pretty busy. Let’s have a look at the other Boulder residents.

Boulders is not be best place for little Egyptian geese.

Another part of the Table Mountain National Park we visited during our stay in Simon’s Town was Cape of Good Hope.

Unfortunately the time for a visit was not the best. During the summer holidays (a few days before Xmas) it is not pure pleasure. Too many cars, too many speeding people (and no speed traps at all). I don’t know why people are confusing National Parks with car racing tracks! Cape of Good Hope offers such a beautiful landscape, why not take the time to admire it?

And now I come to the end of my trip report. From Simon’s Town we explored the whole Cape Peninsula, we visited Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and the Constantias, the beautiful Rondevlei Nature Reserve, the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Wine Routes. The last hours before we left South Africa we spent at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront where we spotted cape fur seals.

Then it was time to say Good Bye.

Thank you for reading!

Please watch this place. It will take a while, but a few short videos will follow.

 :D  Thank you so much, Shi, Duke, FC, saraf, Anri, Sharifa, Vlakvarkvrou, Val. It was a pleasure to share my non-Kruger adventures with you.

Possibly one or the other got an appetite to see all these wonderful parks! They are really worth a visit!

Whilst you are waiting for the videos, one of my best pics of the holiday for you!

Addo is well-known for its elephants. But there are so many other things to see. Enjoy!
