Although we have been in the KNP in December 2010 and March 2011 for the cricket, this holiday in September 2011 (9 – 16) was booked in July 2010. “We” are my daughter Sekhmet (Sumari), me (Vlakvarkvrou) and a Human Sapiens (my sister Hannali).

We left early in Pretoria the morning of 9 September 2011 and arrived at Phabeni Gate just before 12.00 en route to Ngwenya Lodge via Skukuza, Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge taking the tar roads all the way.

Day 1: 12.00 to 1.16
This photo was taken during a previous visit
Image

We saw – Burchell’s Cougal, Impalas, Black Flycatcher, Crested Barbet and a

Grey Hornbill
Image

The next – Rhino sleeping far away in the veldt, an Elephant on a safe distance (for Sekhmet’s piece of mind) and a

Afican Harier-Hawk
Image

Image

And Baboons near Nvamundwa Dam
Image

And this

There was also Hippos at this dam, but we did not take photos of them.

Until next time

Still day 1:
After we left the Nvamundwa Dam we went back to the S1 to Skukuza. We decided that to give us enough time to reach Croc Bridge and to cover as much of the “lower” part of the park, we will keep to the tar roads.
It was very hot and middle of the day. Nevertheless we saw many animals near the road to enable us to take a few photos. My mom (VVV) was driving and I took most of the photos.
These animals do not really need an introduction
Image

Image

We stopped briefly at Skukuza to see if there are any Bats that we can show my mom’s sister…….but nothing!

This is what we encounter further along the way: My mom could not believe that I made her stop for this!!!!
Image

We saw more Giraffe, a Vulture chick in a nest, a terrapin, Brown Snake Eagle, Yellow-billed Hornbill and a Terrapin in the same river near Skukuza as this

Hamerkop
Image

Crested Francolins on the road
Image

Mr. Sleepy who refused to wake up even when we stop next to him to take photos
Image

And his friend’s eye
Image

Buffalo in the Sabie River and Crocodile on a large rock
Image

Image

A few more installments on day 1 to come!!!

Before I say thank you to everybody for still being here - here is a next "chapter": (Mads and I were in the North of KNP for a weekend, but I am back now!)

Still day 1
And we are still on our way to Ngwenya, passed Skukuza - and Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge still to come.

We always stop for a Kudu
Image

At the H12/H4-1 Bridge these fellows were either caucusing or trying to cool off? Quite a representative forum – young and adult Bateleurs, White-backed Vultures and even a pair of Egyptian Geese on the far right
Image

Image

In the same area
A Bushbuck
Image

Juvenile Tawny
Image

Not far from here, another young one – this time in a nest: Young White-backed Vulture
Image

Image

In the next installment on day 1 I will include something on the 1st of three road blocks before we reached Crocodile Bridge.

Still day 1
After the baby Vulture we passed a thirsty Rhino and Impala, Giraffes, some more Hooded and White-backed Vultures
and a beautiful Fish Eagle
Image

Kudu again
Image

And then Sunset Dam with it’s usual abundance of Hippos’, Crocs, Grey Heron, Yellow-billed Storks, Baboons, Groenpootruiters, 3Banded Plovers and
Saddle Bill Storks
Image

We came across Lions sleeping on the sand next to the road. We took a quick photo and left
Image

Please note that it was now 17.05 and we still had some way to go before 18.00. I decided to put my car on cruise control at 40kmh. We should make it now in time for the gate. I do not know when the reception offices at the Lodge close for the day and we still have to book in! ….or will we make it – Murphy decided to step in and present us with road block nr 1
Image

Image

Image

Image

Hubby next to the road
Image

We did not stay long and on with the cruise control at 40kmh again. This “speeding” lasted approximately 10min’s.

And road block nr 2I apologize for the quality of the photos. It was already growing dark and this little fellow’s colour is not very “bright”. When a car starts to move, he will walk to the car, push out his chest, and blow up the feathers on his head – obstructing and “glaring” at the car. Then he will walk back to the side of the road and wait for a car to start moving again…highly entertaining!!! Unfortunately all of us had to be at the gate at a certain time and we had to leave this entertainer (juvenile Bateleur).
Image

Image

Image

Road block nr 3 – this time a proper road block with no change of getting away soon. The oncoming car had its head lights on and the Rhinos’ were very agitated and milling in the road in front of the car. When they switched off their lights, the mom started to relax and moved to the side of the road. Then a blue bakkie stopped next to me in the veldt with a lot of noise and his hazards on. Immediately the Rhinos’ came back. They really looked angry and were pawing on the tar road with their feet and started moving towards us. I could not move back as there were quite a lot of cars behind me now. I think the guy in the bakkie realized his mistake and switched of his hazards. The Rhinos’ immediately calm down and walked away. Sjoe…we lived to see another day!!

The rest of the daily reports will be much shorter and much less eventful.

Day 2

Until next time

Day 4
Our Yellow Ribbon for the day – Michel367

We decided to start day 4 on the S25 and our 1st stop will be at Hippo Pools and Daniel. On our way and close to the pools we found a Pearl Spotted Owlet, Crested Barbet, and Fish Eagles
Image

Image

Image

Daniel immediately got up from his chair at the rock/cliff and started walking with us to a small ladder where we could climb to the top of the rock. My sister decided that it is safer in the car, Sekhmet (Sumari) went with him to the top and I waited patiently on the lower parts. He showed us where leopards come to have their babies and of course the rock-paintings (the part that is left after the 2000 floods). He spoke to us in fluent Afrikaans and switched easily into English when more visitors arrive. We have met him a few times before, but he loves to tell us that he is with SANParks for 21 years. I comment on his .303 rifle and he told me about its kick-back when used. A few photos

Daniel also told us that he was interviewed by a man writing a book on stories of the KNP

“And on we go”…..back to the S25 and perhaps Pretoriuskop”

Day 4 continues with
Zebra and Red-crested Korhaan
Image
Image

LBR, Giraffe and Natal Francolin
Image

Waterbuck and Elephants
Image

And Elephants – this guy decided that his friend’s leaves are nicer/greener than his, so he chased him away and “eat away” all by himself
Image
Image
Image
Image

There was Kudu on the way, more Giraffe and
Mr Puffy (taken through my front window)
Image

I think he is trying to tell me something?
Image
Image

Or just trying to impress?
Image

We then stopped at Afsaal. Sightings saw here – I will post a proper photo of the Skopsie
in a forthcoming post
Image
Image

Young Bushbuck around his mom
Image

Blue Waxbill
Image

Then back to the H3 and Transport Dam. Do not think we will make it to Pretoriuskop
We found this in a tree when we left Afsaal

Until tomorrow

Baboons welcomed us into the park and then this little Kitty (we passed leopard sightings earlier in the week because of traffic and difficulty in seeing the cats.
