Divine7polo-October in KNP...

Unread postby Divine7polo » Tue Sep 20, 2011 6:28 pm

SO excited - one month today until we depart for our annual trip to SA in October...excitement is tangible within the whole family who are marking the days off the calendar... shopping already sent to Pick n Pay and husband surfing the net for new lenses, binocs, torches etc...

This year we have three families joining us from the UK at Ngwenya Lodge...one of whom has never been to Africa - so we are certain that they will bring us that inevitable beginner's luck for sightings! Fingers crossed!

Last year we were also fortunate to have friends join us. On arrival at Ngwenya we had a crested barbet to welcome us - who enjoyed all our meals with us!

After sundowners on the deck we had a lovely braai taking in the unmistakeable sounds, smells and ambience of the Kruger...

We were up at the crack of dawn to be the first at Croc Bridge renewing our Wild Card before heading on the H4-2 to Lower Sabie. Lots of elephants, buffaloe and hippo in the distance on the river, but not close enough to photograph until...

We followed these young lions who sauntered for a Km down the road, before disappearing into the bush when more vehicles arrived.

Someone told us of a fresh giraffe kill on the S82, so off we went - but by then there was a traffic jam:

We were so busy staring at the carcass that we almost missed the King right next to us!

@ Rookie - what a shame that we will miss you - we fly back to the UK on the 30th, which is when you arrive - hope you have a great trip with wonderful sightings (I really believe that first timers bring excellent luck - so fingers crossed for you!) and looking forward to reading your TR on your return!

@ Welsh_Ash - Thank you for reading my TR!

After that amazing kill, we decided to move on to allow others the opportunity to get a good view. This little fellow was also on his way to find breakfast!

After a stop at Lower Sabie we parked up at Sun Set Dam for an hour - always so much going on there! Here is just a taste of who was out and about:

We headed back to Ngwenya Lodge via the S28 and stopped off at the Nthanyathi hide, which proved to be a good call...we had the hide to ourselves and it was wonderful just sitting there observing everything from the iguana catching fish in the mud... to the vervet monkeys copying the iguana... to the elephant who breezed in (oblivious to our presence)... to the lilac breasted roller...bliss...
