Vonnie & co's trip report

Unread postby Vonnie » Fri Jul 13, 2007 10:09 pm

OK. Let me begin by saying that our trip was eventful - don't expect any pictures as I am a terrible photographer and my travelling companion was even worse!!  And both of us are morons as far as following instructions on how to post photographs. We had a fantastic giggle all the way though!

We were in the Kruger from Tuesday the 3rd of July to Monday the 9th of July.

Here goes:

Day 1:

We woke up at 2 in the morning because we wanted to spend as much time in the Park as possible. our intention was to enter at the Punda gate, but somewhere, something went wrong!! What was supposed to have been the Pietersburg road, took us to a taxi rank somewhere in Pretoria!!!

Both my sister and myself were convinced that the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon had posessed us. We lost a few hours and after having crossed through the same toll gate twice, we magically got on to the the right road.

Then we motored and I mean motored towards the Park!!!

But no one warned us that we would have had to travel through Magoebaskloof. That was after we decided that we should rather enter through the Phalaborwa gate. Magoebaskloof is windy & windy (meaning that there are a lot of turns in the road) and I was irate being the driver of these unplanned events!

After that twisty (breezy, blustery) trip, KNP will unwind your tortured soul

Don't worry too much, dear, I get lost in thought (kinda similar to loosing one's mind...)

Still Day 1:

We entered through Phalabowa Gate and did the necessary there.

Then we set off to Shingwedzi determined to get there in good time.

Close to Mopani Camp there was a commotion in the road, Cars were jostling for position when my sister exclaimed "Ietremago!! Nie een nie maar 'n hele familie!!!" Translation: Pangolin!!! Not 1 but a whole family!!!" according to her they crossed the road in single file :slap: So not.......

A kind tourist told us to look back & there were 2 magnifiscent male cheetahs trotting next to the road. They had a startled look but were nevertheless a wonderful welcome to the best place on earth!!!

Still Day 1:

We carried on from the cheetah sighting in good spirits (literally!! ) as we have a reward system in place. If you see something worth celebrating - you do so!

We had a lovely smooth wine on board, served in those lovely stainless steel wine glasses... Life was good and we celebrated!!!!

Still day 1:

We arrived at Mopani in good spirit - as to be expected!!!

Nature called and we obliged.

Back at the car was when the sports started!

We positioned ourseleves in the car and I turned the key to start the car. Not even an acknowledging click! Nothing!!!

I tried again and again.....

Nothing! :?

We hopped out & opened the bonnet, pretending that we knew what we were looking for.

All we saw was a dusty engine! All looked fine. We decided that maybe the engine was a bit overheated from the trip to the taxi rank and through Magoebaskloof. We left the hood open and retired to the car puffing away at those pesky nicintine sticks......

Unfortunately, still day 1:

That was when the the goodness of humanity and the spirit of community (which I believe is only present in the Park - please prove me wrong!!! ) kicks in.

2 Workers saw this odd sight of 2 bats sitting in a car, with the hood open, puffing away frantically, and approached us. One was wearing a Volkswagen Overall with the logo & the works! They looked at the engine and we were very grateful.

Soon several other arbitary people arrived and offered their opinion. I was reassured by the sense of community and the willingness to help.

The Volkswagen dude was my favourite though.....

He suggested that we push start the car & get a new battery.

Which is what we did.....

We got the car going and off we went. We speeded past any sightings too scared to stop in case the engine died. Onward to Shingwedzi The Tropic of Capricorn was lost to us forever! ......

Wait for the rest of day ! ..................

Sigh! Still Day 1:

We arrived at Shingwedzi full throttle (in more ways than one!)

I leave my sister in the car as she has to keep the engine going as we cannot afford for it to die. I, in a dapperly fashion, report to the front desk. The, very efficient, lady at the desk told me that they had a problem with the computers. They had been off line for a few days and that they cannot book me in. OK......

"Can't I just unload my luggage in the mean time at my bungalow?"" I asked. No, was the reply as they were double booked because of the IT problems.

Nice one!!!!!
