What I decided was that my photos should tell the stories of my trips to the parks in SA. I am not going to write paragraphs and paragraphs - only some short comments on the photos, Also I am going to use this topic/thread to tell all the stories. I'll number the trips accordingly. So lets start with my latest trip to the KTP.

Edit 1:

My other trip report can be found:

Mokala edition:

Kgalagadi weekend edition:

Day 1

On route to Kieliekrankie - we took the 4x4 Leeudril route

Image

Near Leeudril - our first interaction with the springboks. "Do I smell something?"

Image

At leeudril - entertainment by a black-headed herron

Image

Against a dune underneath a bush on the 4x4 road we saw this black raptor - it was too far to identify but could it be a Gabar Goshawk (melanistic adult) or black harrier (not really the time of the year for them)?

Day 1 - the 4x4 Leeudril route:

Image

A springbok after a visit to his hairdresser

Image

Couple of Southern pale chanting goshawks playing around the bush.

Image

Even a lanner falcon wanted to come and see who invaded his territory

Day 1 continued:

Image
Near the end of the 4x4 route - a ground squirrel with house keeping duties with "rocks" flying. Luckily nobody behind him.

Image
Also on the 4x4 route - martial eagles playing in the air. Just too far for a nice picture.

Image
After the 4x4 route our first view of the king near Kij Kij on the far side of a dune.

Day 1 concluded:

Image
As usual - on the lower dune road on the way to Kieliekrankie - the black korhaan in the late afternoon sun on the edge of the road

Day 2 - had a trip towards Kij Kij and Melkvlei in the morning and Gemsbokplein in the afternoon. What we usually do is to leave camp with the opening of the gates, stay on the road/near the waterholes untill 10-11H00. Then back to camp for brunch/rest/photo editing (luckily I do have a power invertor in my Fortuner to charge the batteries) and then back unto the road around 14H30 untill the close of the gates.

Image
Near Kij Kij we found this martial eagle busy building his nest. We waited for 20min for him to leave his nest, fly down the ground and pick up a "branch" for his nest.

Image
Then we saw this Kori buster trying to clear the dune in the early morning - WOW, it is so beautiful to see the heaviest bird in SA taking off.

Image
To conclude this post of birds - our friend at the entrance of our Kieliekrankie lodge. The every-present black-chested prinia giving us a warm welcome.

Day 2 - the day of the cheetas (not the FS rugby team unfortunately):

Image
Early morning just between Kij Kij and Melkvlei. "Well, you really cannot follow us, so we are leaving you now. Just a quick look back to say good bye".

Image
As we turned around, we found these three on the top of dunes next to Kij Kij. "Well, we are back and we are in business but it looks like a slow day." We left them there and went back to Kieliekrankie.

Image
During our afternoon drive we found this one near Montrose. "Do you mind if I use one of nature's toothpicks?"

Image
But I don't think I want to clean my teeth like this.

But that was not the end of cheetas for the trip.

Day 2 - some other intersting interaction:

Image

Some gemsbok getting nervous with all the cheetas around Kij Kij. "I am sure the game rangers won't mind if I run up the one way with the smell of cheeta all around!"

Image

This was our varourite sighting of the afternoon apart from the cheetah with the tooth pick in his mouth. Just past Auctherlonie, the suricate came up the bush closest to the road and used it as a viewpoint. He stayed there for almost 10 minutes while looking after the young ones. Until one car just "raced" between us and the suricate without slowing down to look at our sighting. Some of the park visitors just don't have any sighting etiquette. Luckily I got some really nice close-up photos.

Image

The bat-eared foxes were everywhere - "Do I hear you snoring again?"

Day 2 - concluded:

Image

Down at Kij Kij's second waterhole there were thousands of red-headed finches, red-billed quelea finches and various doves. What a spectaular sighting - unbelievable!!! Then there were the Lanner falcons, bb jackals and a Tawny eagle around just to have some interesting interaction. On Day 3 we came back for more action and photos.

Image

And as we drove towards Kieliekrankie late in the afternoon (after our cheeta sighting), I saw this African wild cat trying to catch some crowned lapwing. But as soon as I stopped, she looked at me in disgust and ran back into the grass.

Day 3 - Today we drove back to Twee Rivieren to pick up our friend and then to Nossob, meaning it was driving the entire day.

Image

An early morning visit to the spotted hyenas' den near Kamfersboom. But the den is on the wrong side of the river creating only this almost black and white photo

Image

After 10min the hyenas left the den and as I was about to start my car, we heard a lion. About 1km towards Twee Rivieren there he was lying against the dune. "What shall I have for breakfast - wildebeest or springbok?"
After about 30min he stood up and started walking, trying to hunt a wildebeest. But a springbok alerted everybody. Then he walked right up to the hyena den and we saw him jumping up once on the den. Afterwards nothing - I hope the hyena cubs are still allright.

Image

Just before Houmoed we came across two pygmy falcons hunting some prey in a social weavers' nest. We sat there for about 45min watching them flying into the nest. Eventually one came out with a nestling/chick. But it seems like it too big and strong for the feamle falcon (reddish on the back) and she dropped it. Afterwards she tried to pick it up from the ground but without any success. She left it there and carry on trying out another hole in the nest.

Day 3 - the waterhole near Kij Kij:

Image

Back at Kij Kij these thousand of birds and the lanner falcons were still there. Parked there and watched the actions for another hour. "Chicken or beef?, Chicken or beef?. Sorry mam, we only have chicken left." Sorry for he quality of the photo but it is VERY difficult to catch those falcons in fight as they do come over the water at a tremenous speed.

Image

"Coming in, all system locked, let us hope for a stike"

Image

"We have a hit! we have a hit!"

Day 3 - concluded:

Image

After he excitement at Kij Kij, the jackal brought some sanity into the day near Kapersdraai. "Anything for me? I am liking my lips. Anyway, good night"

Day 4 - the Day of the Bird:

We stayed around Nossob for the day - travelled up to Bedinkt and down to Marie se gat. First stop in morning was at Cubitje Quap where a lot of doves entertained us with their flights and even a lanner falcon and red-necked falcon tried their best but not as successful as the falcon at Kij Kij. No hits. Interesting to see the red-neck falcons manner of hunting (small movements around the bushes) vs. the lanner falcon (fullspeed dives)

Image
"Smooth landing, wasn't it?"

Image
"Here I am coming in for landing - please clear the landind area!"

Image
"O no, really. I cannot get use to the landing and I cannot look. Hey. move out of the way!"

Day 4 - The rollers of Bedinkt

We sat at Bedinkt for almost 1.5 hours watching two Lilacbreasted rollers hunting from the tree next to the waterhole. Making some interesting photo opportunites - getting away and landing again.

Image

"That insect is mine, I'll race you!"

Image

"O well, I do have more glamour, flair and colour than you, so take that."

Image

Even the goshawk wanted to be an angel around Bedinkt
