On the morning of 01-06-2011 we set out for a short little trip to the zoo.
Entering at Crocodile Bridge and ending at Lower- Sabie.

Boy oh boy.
As it was the first time for my friends to South Africa and the Kruger Park they had it coming to them.

Between the low water Bridge and the gate, in the early morning light, 2 male lions that made them jump. They appeared, out of the dark, right next too the car.
I was turning the car every which way to get them an opportunity to make pictures and so did everybody else that arrived on that early hour. :wall: :wall:

After we entered the gate we first had to make a very important stop in CB. Hot water for coffee.
And then we drove off in the rising sun.

First Dukes waterhole. No Duke to be found and later we came across these 2 fellows that were in dire need for a sip of water as the sun really started to swelter at that time.

Driving towards Lower Sabie the usual game is seen.
Impala, Warthog, Kudu, Buffalo etc.

Image

At the big Sausage trees along the river, just under LS, we came into a small traffic jam.
Apparently there was a Leopard in the tree.
We looked and looked, but could not find it and we decided to leave it for now and drove on to Lower Sabie for a short pit-stop.

There I met up with Flying Cheetah. Great to see him again as we haven't talked for half a year now. He is in the last few days of his trip.
After our goodbye's we drive on to Sunset dam.
There were plenty of Crocs and the girls were thrilled by the huge Croc basking on the bank and by the amount of hippo's.
Across the dam there was a huge herd of Buffalo taking a drink.

We decided to get some lunch at Nkulu and drove on.
A few km's North of the dam there was a huge traffic jam.
A small pride of lions had caught a buffalo just next to the road.
Now that was a sighting I was waiting for.
The traffic jam, however, was so bad that we did not get any great pictures and after I had a few stiff "talks" with some "protruders" and "hoggers" we managed to proceed our way to some needed refreshments.

After a quick lunch at Nkulu and some entertainment form the Vervets being mobbed by the Yellow billed Hornbills, we decided to go a bit further northwards and take the Salitjie road back to Lower Sabie.

We saw beautiful scenery but just a few animals.
Some Kudu, Warthog and a few Baboons.
At the crossing of the river I encountered a "lifer" on my side of the road which was just begging to have his photograph taken.
A Brown Hooded Kingfisher.

Image

Slowly we crossed the causeway and decided to have one try at the Leopard in the Sausage Tree.
Alas. He did not want to come and play and we drove to Lower Sabie where I dropped my friends off as they were staying there for the night.
I slowly took the drive back to Croc Bridge exit enjoying the views of the setting sun and the enjoyment of the thoughts of what the next day would bring.

At the lodge I quickly took a shower and I made myself a bit of fire and thought about how nice it would be to sit in Kruger now.
Now I was sitting here all alone because there was no camping space left in the camps. :wall: :wall:

Image

The braai with some Klippies and Coke was great with the sounds of the Hippo's playing in the background.

The next morning it was an early rise as I had to be at the gate at 6AM in order to be at Lower Sabie around 7AM.
The sun came up with a beautiful display of colours.

Image

5 Minutes into the drive I spotted something in front of me while doing 50km/h an hour.
LIONS!!!
5 Males running on the road.
What to do now?
Stopping would screw up my time table and I really do not like to be late for an appointment.
I decided to take pictures of them with my "mik en druk" as I passed them.
The result is very poor. :slap:

Image

10 Minutes after that Hyena.
Those pictures were even worse. and a little later a Black Backed Jackal.

Image

Geez. Seeing all of those and I cannot even take the time to totally enjoy the sightings. :wall: :wall:
Life in the bush can really be tough.

I arrived just in time to make the coffee and after that we set off to Sunset dam to see if there is something worth watching.

Flying Cheetah joined us there and told me that I had just missed a Cheetah sighting on my drive up to Lower Sabie. Boy oh boy. What a start again.

At Sunset dam there was not that much going on apart from a huge herd of Buffalo coming down to have a drink.

Image

After a while we drove towards the Lion kill the previous day.
It was still quite busy on the road, but doable.
Only a few spareribs was left of the Buffalo.

Image

Image

The "undertakers" were there too. Patiently waiting to finish the scraps

Image

We drove on and decided to head westwards for a late breakfast at Afsaal.
The scenery was breathtaking as always, but not many animals to be seen but a few Mongeese in a tree.
It was getting hot now.
Afsaal was a welcome sight to see as we crossed over the ridge.

We decided to take the dirtroad, S118, S119 and S25, back to Crocodile Bridge were I would drop them off for the night.

Slowly we drove through the nice and warm landscape until we came to the Gardenia hide.
Apart for an Elephant or 3 playing in the water, there was nothing much too see.
After watching them making a "fool" of themselves we decided it was time to leave again.
Walking to the entrance of the hide I smelled a familiar smell and as the wind was blowing towards us it could not be the elephants behind us.

We were trapped!!
The whole parking place was filled with about 20 elephants. A breeding herd. There was no way we could get to the car.
Boy. Those things are huge if they are about 2 - 3 metres away from you.

I was so impressed, and so were the girls, that we started taking pictures after they decided too move away from us.

Image

In silence we drove on, probably missing a lot of sightings. What a great experience.

Suddenly we heard a noise in the trees.
Darn. I thought he was still in Milano!
Andy came out to greet us.

Image

A bit further I spotted an old friend.

Crested Barbet.

Image

And just before the sun started setting we found these big fellows at the Hippo Pools.

Image

In awe we drove, through the setting sun, to Crocodile Bridge where the girsl were going to spend the night.

That night I had the most beautiful dream.
I was going to spend my last years on this earth inside Kruger.

With that thought I set out the next day for my pick-up at CB.

We drove through the early morning light in search for beautiful sightings.

Image

We found these guys hopping along side of the road.

Image

The sun-up was a perfect array of colours

Image

And then we found this idiot at a Rhino sighting

Image

Sadly enough we did not see that much and it was time to drop the ladies off at the Lebombo border-post as they are backpacking their way through the South of Africa.

Now it was me time and around 9 AM I entered the gate again.

As I slowly drove on the tar northwards I was thinking where to go.
I decided to drive on the backroads to Mpondo dam and from there on I will see what I will do.

The S26 was rather quite, but beautiful as ever.

As I came up on Mpondo I notice this lady. She was there with a few Impala friends

Image

I took a rest at the dam to take in the wildlife in and around it and then headed off westwards.

As my mind drifted off to wonderland I suddenly noticed something running on the road in front of me.
What was that?
A strange looking thing about the size of a cat and all furry/ woolly.

Suddenly it clicked as my brain finally got into gear.

A Cheetah cub!!!!!!

It reared off to the right in the grass and as I slammed on the brakes I heard the birdlike call of the mum.
I tried to scan the area for her as I tried to reach for my camera at the same time.

Then I saw them.
Mum and 3 cubs.

Because I slammed on the brakes it startled them and they went off into the bush. To fast for me to get a picture. :wall: :wall: :wall:

But what a great sighting.
My first ever with cubs.

Slowly I drove on towards Afsaal as in a dream.
Wow. 3 Cheetah cubs with their mum.

Afsaal was quite busy and the breakfast was great as usual.
No Bushbuck or Scopsie to be seen, but that could not take away my good mood.

I decided to take the Voortrekker road to Pretorius kop and exit at Numbi.
As usual, just my luck, the road was hot, but quite.
Until I met up with this fellow.
A Buffalo with war-paint on.

Image

A little further this Waterbuck with only one horn.

Image

And then these fellows

Image

Another great sighting.

At Pretoriuskop I decided to do the Fayi loop. A first for me.
A beautiful drive, but very quite.
Apart from a few birds nothing much.

Image

Then I wanted to see Mesteldam and I drove on the loop around the Shabeni koppie.
A beautiful drive with breathtaking scenery.

There I saw this lifer. A Little Bee- eater.

Image

At Mesteldam nothing was going on and I decided to head for the gate and that was another great few days in Kruger.
